Well the bump is coming along (Though I can't see why any of the detailing in this shot need normal maps over bump maps), but because these are hard surface metal objects, get the bump off of them!

The metal grates or the square metal blocks on the roof do not need ANY bump besides for fine detailing, and it just ends up making every model look like a puffy marshmellow. It has the clay look of doom 3 is you will.

The other jarring thing to start thinking about is how intense the spec is on some metals but not others, it really makes it look odd. I'll assume you do not have ambient occlusion in the engine yet, but is it planned?

(I don't mean to come off as a prick sorry if I do)

As I've probably said before: why not try a student version of one of the higher end programs like Maya or 3ds Max? I mean you can't use it to make money but learning new and improved software could really benefit your already great work.

What made me go out to learn this is I had never tried to do it directly in Maya, though I knew you could in 3Ds Max. I'd worked with a few programs like crazy bump, mudbox, and zbrush and they all have their own place and use. For hard surface stuff, unless I need some fine details in the normals, this works incredibly well and is very easy to do.

What problems have you had with blender and baking? I could have sworn I've seen it done fairly well on that program before.

This is a static render. These shots take about 2-5 minutes depending on the quality I render them at. This is by far the fastest rendering of the 3 scenes I've been working on.

It isn't quite photo-realistic due to the shaders not working as I'm trying to get them too (Mostly just the front yellow part). It's mostly int he reflectivity and spec I need to work on it.

I personally don't bake high poly to low poly unless I'm using mudbox or zbrush, neither of which I've had access to for these scenes. I do however bake normals in maya itself for some details (Very easy to do) which are used in the background and such to match the closer geo detail.

I do like the buggy though, I just wish the poly usage was a bit better (At least to the way I would do it, though I may be bias/wrong)

AlCool Feb 25 2012, 6:19pm replied:

The cracked desert was based on some photos, then modified a section to become repeating, then modeled it as geo.

My main problem with the buggy U linked is the lack of particularity (Reflectivity in a game not as much) on the materials, and the use of polys in the wheels but not on the surfaces that are supposed to be round like the metal bars.

It does however make me want to find a place to put in that race-car-ish mesh that they cover windows with in here somewhere, because I forgot how awesome they looked!

Yeah I was thinking of doing a second variant. I said it on a dif picture but, the background was made to look like it already has DOF on it, so when I add that in compositing, I won't need as much. I can unblur it if I need to thought. The horizon line does look pretty bad with no DOF on the ground plane definitely.

Thinking about it, it's the normal map and texture becoming lower values in the distance that fakes the DOF on it a bit, haha.

I actually had little trouble with stretching and angles, but I guess I'm used to doing these kinda of things. The only problem I've had in those areas is with the buildings. One fix for it I find is making the skydome immensly far away, which mine isn't. Might need to zoom it further away.

Like I said in the other one, I'll check in compositing, because I definitely don't want the background to clash with the foreground.

AlCool Jan 19 2012, 9:55pm replied:

Just one thing though, I intentionally blurred it up a bit so I wouldnt have to as much in compositing. Whats in the middle will be the showpiece, but I want the background to look real enough.

I just used a square brush for these, but i know what you mean about the photorealistic and painted styles clashing. I'll make sure to do a quick composite to check how it looks with the depth of field effects.

Also with the particle effects, I tried about 3 different ways to do them, each getting results I didn't like. I planned of having it shooting from the back and along the front behind the skis, then blurring it out in compositing. I kinda got into the mindset to just try and show off the model and not worry about the particles.

If you have any suggestions for places to go when looking for a good way to do these kinds of particles I'd be happy to check it out. Hell I even tried modeling in the dust effects, which seemed to actually be not bad, but rendering-wise, you can probably see where that went.

I have uploaded what an ambient occlusion render looks like for some old models in my profile. It basically controls how much light different parts of the model will take.

I'm not much for the technical jargon of how it works, but you could fake Ambient Occlusion by making dozens and dozens of lights in a sphere around your scene, which is why baking in ambient occlusion maps or doing an ambient occlusion pass that you overlay later can really help bring out the shape in your scene. It gives everything a more realistic look with the lighting.

I would also avoid ever using an ambient light if you happen to be using one in this scene. Flattens everything out something fierce :\

Anyways in short, give it a look and see if you can incorporate that into your 3D work! I don't know how sketchup works or if it has AO at all, but it would only make your models look even better!

I can see some great work in the forest shots for that update. The only problem I have with these kinds of environments is the trees. They are what break the false reality for me and for a couple of reasons:

-Common to these kinds of environments, from a front or side view of a tree the edge can be distinguished quite clearly., especially when all branches are given similar angles to the branches.

-The indistinguishable layering of the branches. Nothing clearly pushes out or looks to be infront of anything else. It's the lighting that seems to be needing a slight touchup (some more AO or final gathering/global illumination). The same effect is needed for the shrubbery.

These could just be issues I have with the cryengine in general (Global Illumination and final gathering to make the bounce light MAKE MORE SENSE to me), but that is really my ONLY problem.

Really, most players won't notice anything ingame because they aren't as critical as I tend to be, especially towards this engine. Please don't take these as insults, I'm only trying to cause improvement!

Remember, fire stays lit on the ground too, or it wouldn't be able to get to all those trees. I see the char but no fire around them. Also, think about darkening the map a little and adding more light and glow only around the fire areas. Lots of opportunity with a map like this to go wild.

Good attention to detail making a few sections broken with a shoddy repair job done by the neighborhood carpenter, but with the way that the broken parts of perfect holes, it almost seems like the bridge and stairs were never broken at all, and instead never finished. Consider making each edge of the broken area beaten up and falling apart. Hell you might have planned that already, seeing as this is a WIP.

Don't make it too scary though, don't want those survivors all cowering on the other side of the river ;D.

The only D2D provider that bothers me is Steam, and why?

"If they don't deliver, try another service instead, its not like your married."

This doesn't apply to steam, because since it is owned by valve, valve games beyond the original version of HL cannot be played without it, which is completely unfair to customers who don't want to have to make new profiles and accounts to play their game, especially ones who don't understand that to begin with. I only bought CSS so I could get mods, as with HL1. I've only boughten a few games on steam because that was the only way I could (Like KF which is always steam only, even if you buy the retail version).

Forcing all the content that steam offers onto someone just because they want to play one game forces them to think of buying others they constantly see advertised on steam, which is near considered brainwashing. You can't compared forced to what is not, like comparing the communities of 2 gaming chat programs like xfire and steam, because ultimitely, everyone who has downloaded and used xfire has done it through their own accord, and they promote no game over any other because they are not a game making and licensing company, simply a provider of extra features.

I could rant and rant and rant on why I hate steam but on this website it's as you put it: "ultimately pointless".

If this is the only indie game you hear about then you don't visit many sites, or just don't read other articles on moddb. This game might be difficult to sell to all audiences (genre-wise), but for its target audience, I'm sure it has their full attention.

The model really needs a lot more work before the normal is applied. A solid foundation is key to character modeling.

The left one looks normal smoothed, and seems to have very low attention to detail. Every vertex should have a purpose, and not simple be there for a normal map. Normal mapping is the FINAL step.

+3 votes   media: K98 German Sniper Rifle
AlCool Nov 4 2009, 1:33pm says:

I will say it is bad, especially to unreal standards, but it is a definite improvement for you.

The model itself only has a few issues, as mentioned above, but it lacks any depth in the texturing. You should start learning how to properly texture a character using elements such as Colour maps, specular highlights, and the most important one, a Normal map. Without these your character will look poorly detailed and even more poorly lit in a proper UE3 environment.

In its current state it would fit as an UE1 character, but a good texture could change all of that. UT3 characters use 2048 X 2048 for the head, and the rest of the body separately. That space should be used for high resolution detailing, and should never have a lot of 1 solid colour (certain styles can break this rule).

I'll give you the effort, but much learning is needed to prosper as a character modeler.

At most this object might only be 1K poly, which isn't bad at all.

My only problem with the animations is they seem jerky. Unnaturally jerky. It looks as if there is a frame or two missing before the animation was copied and applied to the other side to create the one-two step, and thus it looks like there is a small jump inbetween each change of step. I can't possibly be the only one noticing this. The only other thing I would say is that it must be hard for him to focus on the area ahead of him if his head flys from left to right as hard and fast as it is. The bodies equilibrium should keep the head from bobbing as much as it is unless hes moving unreasonably fast, and we simply cannot tell with the view given in this test.

The difference between a TC and a full game though, is that the game uses the CORE engine, not the modding engine. There is a large difference in what can be done between the too.

Again with bad comaprisons! Your on a roll!

First, you can't RESKIN an engine. And I made the reskinned resold comment like one? 5 or 6 comments above this one actually.

Second, your comparing games built off an engine to the game that released with the engine. When they make a new game they use the ENGINE not the GAME ok? Get it yet?

Last, the COD series is a different matter completely. A) Each game IS using a different engine developed by them. B) Each game is in a different time period entirely. C)I can see why they wouldn't want to patch COD2 with vehicles, 2 dozen new guns, 2 dozen new maps, and higher quality everything, and with a whole new compaign, multiplayer modes, player support, antilag systems, etc, like a few years LATER.

Patching something using completely different EVERYTHING is different then patching in new content to the same game. CoD2 and CoD3 are completely different games, just like CoD3 and CoD4 and up.

I'm ignorant? Because I've actually looked and read everything that's come up? Because I'm not a fanboy enough of the first to make stupid points? It's the SAME GAME. How can you not see that?

Definitely consider investing in a stronger program for modeling. Z brush is only good if you use it to normal map. It destroys your geometry. Remember UT models are low poly, make high poly, then normal mapped back. They are not as detailed as they look ;D. Also remember the character texture standard for unreal is 2048 X 2048 for the face, and a separate same size for the body (This is what THEY use not saying you have to but just FYI). 3Ds Max and Maya are both great programs to invest in for the modeling side of things.

Whatever you decide, keep it up!

I've already done both realistic and cartoony characters. Let me tell you that it is FAR easier to make a character in 3D then to draw one. Rigging is only difficult for some key locations, mainly the arms and upper torso, and the face (Especially for female characters and especially if your making the face animate-able). Since I am a modeler I won't be doing any hardcore animation, but I still have to learn it to a degree. Really it's just time consuming, and knowing weighs. For characters it's ALL musclework.

But who am I kidding I'm a prop modeler at heart :P

These left 4 dead mods are retarded. Why don't they move to a better engine? The L4D SDK isn't made to be altered. The AI is far to complex to add all these new things these idiots are going for. ALL other engines can support hordes of AI EXCEPT source. Quit being so f'ing bias and fricken learn a new engine!

Easy example, UT3? Huh?

I can support well over 100 Raptor enemies and over 25 T-Rex as well as a few dozen zombies in 1 game with no frameloss. Why? BECAUSE IT'S A BETTER ENGINE.

Source can't even handle 100 on the regular SDK, let alone the frameloss on L4D in certain situations. And the SDK doesn't even allow any of these functions these idiots are going for.

No engine ever releases the full SKD. If you want it you goto get it signed off to you, and that's usually only for making commercial games (Something to sell basically). They can go so much further then conventional modders with the full untouched engine then engine run-off.

An indie game should either be a standalone of a mod, or a custom-engine. Not a professional engine as signed off to make and sell from the company themselves, that just gets unfair to the other participants in this contest.

Compare Dark Messiah Might and Magic or Zeno Clash to every Sourcemod out there. They are full SOURCE GAMES and have been given the blank source engine from valve to make which is why their quality is so much higher then anything else on the engine. Making mods that don't even resemble the engines they are built from with very high quality work and large teams supporting them.

You know, standard UT3 stuff.

I'm also surprised something like Mech Warrior Living Legends wasn't considered unless it ISN'T considered an upcoming mod (Crysis, like LightSpire)

The mods I was hoping would make it here didn't. These are good mods but the only one that really has my interest is CURSE and maybe cry of fear. Lightspire is pretty much gonna be a full game but I don't think it will be out for awhile. Petrograds coming along but I still feel crysis when I see it. At fates edge still ahs a long way to go but is definitely coming along but Oblivion mods in general need a lot of care to seem more like mods then add-ons. All great mods but I expected more and am a bit disappointed. Wheres the UT3 at?

Without smooth he is quite low poly, cause I built him to be smoothed (Except his face mask). He does have a head which I may get some screen of, but the mouth could use some work (Inside I mean because it fed up and I've had no time to really fix it). The helmet was built completely separately before the head so IMO it's a bit big, and he does look short with his head and neck as is. When the books get fixed up I'll work on the pants. Just for the sake of it I've wanted to stick a backup holster on his ankle, which would allow me to add some cuffs around it and such. The pants were very last minute so I know they need a lot of work. ATM his jacket only has 2 pockets on it but I've been meaning to add more on his arm areas and such, but remember hes a recon so he's meant to be faster then a general soldier. He goes medium to light on his loadouts. When I finish making my gun (Sub machine gun if I can and MAYBE a pistol) he will get holsters for them on his side and ankle as I said. Thx for the crit, you know I'd have gave twice as much to you XD (Thx for going easy :D)

Nice to see the directionchange to make you different from other run of the millz, ands ome nice features to be included :D. Personally the only games you should ever just run and shoot in are quake and UT, anything beyond that needs some sort of idea behind why they are running and shooting and some alternate gameplay to keep it interesting beyond the regular twitch shooter nub ;D

The current alpha is very fun over a LAN vs the AI guards. Really reminds me of thief and splinter cell. Maybe get some better voice casts or redo them a bit so they don't sound so low res and sometime unnecessarily funny (AKA "I'm going to make you into a pincushion!" - AlCool was made into a pin cushion -)

Overall I really like the idea and hope to see a larger beta release sometime to help get this mod recognized over Moddbs growing community. Take advantage of the new unreal mod support in the massive update coming.

Yeah jumping is useless when there's nothing to jump onto, and it gives mappers the useless-ness of "stacking boxes" so players can get to an obj. AoC really doesn't need the function but a possible sprinting jump for a wide gap option for mappers, that EATS stamina for breakfast when used.

AoC really doesn't need a freeclimb but it can be a plus to many games, thought it doesn't fit AoC's heavy armor scaling walls thing. (Jeez everyone wants a system like RnL now, realism ftw :D).

Definitely strive to be less like Half-Life is terms of movement.

You obviously have no idea what your talking about.

Neither of us ever said recession or depression, although we said there was a financial crisis, which in this case is a recession. YOU said there was none.

Valve stated that maps can be ported, not that THEIR maps can be ported.

I know where he is from. Choice? He didn't choose his first language, it was spoon fed to him, as it is to most familys. English is becoming a worldwide language, and if he is using, he should at least take the advise to use it right.

Do you mod? No probably not. You probably just make maps, since that is all you can do with the so called L4D SDK. You can't import weapons, enemies, and the programming there-in. You can't do a TC of L4D, because the SDK doesn't allow you to replace all of it's content. You can reskin, but that's about it. In the HL and OB SDK you can make a TC that contains nearly none of the original content of the SDK and game.
