The middle 2 were both redone a bit after the wizard was finished, as they were originally done in around 20 minutes, and turned out fairly horrible because of it. I did however leave in the hilarious perspective on the Paladin because it made the portrait look funnier.

For the top 2 I did more recently, I tried a different style for each to see what I could come up with. They were the only 2 that had been posed for deliberately. I think both turned out pretty great.

They did seem to get better as I did more.

Definitly need to add some shader work and image based lighting to this ;D

Model is pretty solid, but I can't help but feel the proportions are a bit off. It feels... stubby...

I would also say to lay down the smoothing a lot less, and instead work on the normals to get the effect you want, while only beveling the edges that need it to get that smooth effect without so much geometry. Personally I see cars as hard surface models, and leave the smooth edges to the normals to give it a really tough look.

Keep it up!

With prettier graphics and a very intuitive yet complex battle system, it is a MUST HAVE for any old school gamer. Mind you the demo is much shorter then per usual from spiderweb it is a great play for those on the fence.

Those familiar with the Avernum or Exile series will find something new this time around, with 4 classes each with their own skill tree giving each character a very unique playstyle. I myself favour the ShadowWalker.

It's great to see Spiderweb on Moddb and I hope their new game does well. As soon as I get my Desura set up this will be my first purchase!

Graphically i must criticize the the guns texture. It seems to shine a LOT (Far more then any gun should), even tho the texture seems to make it look old and battered. The texture feels a tad plain to me as well.

The second thing is the vehicle. It looks quite low detail, although we don't get much of a look at it, and the shader didn't seem right for a vehicle.

This is just early critic so take it as you will. I LOVE where this mod is going! Can't wait to see more!

What I feel these scenes lack to really help them pop out dimensionally is some Ambient Occlusion. because the lighting is really evenly hitting everything that's in our out of the key sky light.

I've only played this with 3 people every time and beat hard mode countless times and very hard but once. There really aren't many parts that you NEED every character or specific ones until the end like you described with the spike balls and of course, the last mission. The game always respawns you on the resurrecting checkpoints with health determined by difficulty (Very Hard mode gives u one hit every time), which, although sucks, gives you the incentive to not get hit, hopefully allowing you to improve in your game.

The thief takes easy street almost every time, the wizard runs and is completely useless on bosses, and the knight is a smasher who's shield can protect him from basically everything, but he becomes far more useful near the end. (Especially once you get the hammer and can do the suicidal hammer jump attack of ultimate death that can one hit bosses)

The game is definitely not without many flaws, but it really was a highly enjoyable game, especially with 2 friends. You sound like you enjoyed the game, but got really flustered on a few of the frustration areas of the game. I can imaging your describing the experience with the last level in a far longer rant then this.

The success of this one only brought something better on the horizon: Gametrailers.com

I'm liking the map. That one larger structure is a bit boxy and feels so out of place with the environment, like it needs overgrowth oon it to make it look less out of place. The village as well could use some base to the structures like the are below them was actually dug out a bit to accommodate for the buildings. The shadows themselves seem a bit harsh for the indistinct lighting coming in from the distant sun over the mountains, because the trees and much of the rest of the environment don't also show the harsh dark shadows. Great work so far!

I'm looking forward to a map where there is finally a use for the flashlight! Need more dark forests and mine shafts and abandoned mansions/warehouses that require the players to light up.It will give the game that extra bit of horror it needs.

Back to MMOs.

I don't view many MMOs, even guildwars, as that special. Most of the time MMOs I try fall under the category of "Generic MMO", aka, the "Silkroad effect".

This is the grind based MMO, that often lacks any enemy aggro, that relies on gather quests and long distance running for gameplay hours, that offers a very small actual variety of weapons and enemies (Reusing is key here, don't be fooled), and often lacks any organization in their city areas just for the sake of making you use their maps and run around wasting time. These MMOs tend to promise a lot more at higher levels, but the grind taken to reach those levels often leads many gamers to give up along the way. These MMOs feature artwork that is always a lie, as well as high and low graphic settings, that are just as FOS. They also tend to run poorly even on the best hardware, due to poor engine optimization.

Personally, I've ever only got hooked into a few MMOs, that not only promised something new, but delivered it as soon as possible. An MMO that stood out, and played far differently then not only other MMOs, but many other games from different genres out there. I enjoy a game that puts skill ahead of playtime, and the skill involved is not only based on specific skills/abilities/specialmoves you pick up along the way (Also known as the "Diablo 2 effect", where each individual skillpoint in the skilltree, and every attribute point in the character sheet, will decide whether you will make a good character or not. Knowing where to put points is more important then anything else). The only other thing I need is either friends, or a good community to play with (Which I find many lack nowadays). Very few MMOs, meet my high standards, which is why many MMOs have hit my recycle bin before truly having a chance to shine.

There are MANY games that never end, mostly RPGs, but really, that's in the way you look at it. If you're going in wanting to "Beat the game", aka: the campaign, then your game probably won't last much longer then a few weeks of decent playtime. If you're going in competitively or wanting to "Be the best", then you will be forever stuck in conflict with not only the game, but anyone else in it who has sought after the same goal. There are many other addiction based reasons that a game will never end but overall, we all eventually find a way to end it for ourselves (Especially when something new comes out).

I highly agree that modding can be never ending, in that improvements can always be made. Really, I look at modding as practice for making an actual game, although it can easily be taken a step further, as seen in the cases of the MSUC. Really, the mindset it, "I can make this better", because nothing will ever be perfect, and most look back at their old work and see it as amateur, compared to the skills they have now. Modding is a beautiful thing in the gaming world.

Why I hate people who say this, is they don't seem to understand what they are looking at. Sure it is impressive from an artistic standpoint, but from an engine standpoint?

It is always the mapping (Except in the case of the rendered models, but even then, those aren't in-game, and most are on Z-Brush, which is used to hide detail for most inexperienced modellers), and as such it is as good as the person making it. Most of the time you see incredible mapping done on source, most of the objects in the scene are not physics objects, because source is incredibly unoptimized, unless you do it yourself, which can only be done so far without buying the full engine.

The 2 main games that have been sold using the source engine (Thankfully not picked up by valve) both yielded incredible results (Being Dark Messiah Might and Magic 8 and Zeno Clash), and really show what the engine can do as a whole. Even then, a high end machine will get less frames on those games then on a more benchmark game nowadays because of both optimization and hardware support, like newer Dx, d3d rendering, and multi-core.

The most recent "Whoa ! This is Source?" moment I've seen is the tornado in Dual Reality. Now what this mod has done has been done already by portal, except they added the time stop effect, which is impressive, but nothing amazing. The tornado itself looked pretty cool, but you'll notice an immense framed-drop when it destroys a building. A frame-drop higher then one you would get during a nuke scene on Crysis.

As you probably know, I'm more towards being an Unreal and ID Tech fan-boy, because I grew up on them, and consider them the 2 best engines ever made. The industry is on my side, so I'll stick with it.

(BTW, there is nothing I hate more then a source screenshot being compared to Unreal or Crytek. It makes me want to slap them in the face, and makes me doubt they have played the games, or can run them on high enough settings to make that assumption.)

No actually I can't tell that the object in the second 2 letters is a ninja or robot. The middle one makes me think of camo for a commando, and the right one doesn't look like anything in particular. The limited space in the letters makes it hard to distinguish what they are, unlike the dinosaur which is a closeup of a popular dinosaur that someone would have to be daft not to see.

Even looking closer now, I find the 3 to be distracting in the robots title, because it made me stop and look at it separately from the rest of the image, feeling it was a mistake before realizing it's supposed to be there.

Even on the website I can't even tell that it is a knife unless I really look close, because of all the black around it making it seem black as well. The D also still looks like a stylistic C, but that could just be me (Which mostly does this because it is the only letter that the knife interacts with, taking the viewer by surprise).

That is fine and all but distributing music that does not belong to you really is illegal. If people wanted these songs, they probably have them and can do this themselves with a simple media converter. Another way is to just turn off ingame music and turn on music in the background.

Either way, this should not be up.

I find most people can't envision what the other side is like, how they feel, and why they do what they do. Often they simply seem to caught up in themselves and their arrogance to even consider that people can differ from their obviously superior opinion.

A boycott can be annoying when it is one very small insignificant group that is having problems coping with a few minor issues, but in our case at least we have made list after list of what we find wrong with what is going on, and still people seem to not understand what we're talking about. 40 thousand people can't ALL be wrong can they? Especially if they all have similar opinions on the same issues, and realize that they aren't the only ones who feel this way.

For me I've only boycott a few games, while the largest 2 have been AA and L4D. Although I'm not getting MW2, the boycott still seems unnecessary. I dislike it for a few simple things, being the removal of leaning, the lack of dedicated servers (Being a PC gamer), and in that it feels like they simply remade MW1 using the WaW version of the same engine. I don't feel like I'm getting something new, and for 60 dollars, something new is the LEAST I can expect.

Now that I'm done rambling, hopefully your article opens at least a FEW eyes towards what makes the average boycotter different from those who oppose them.

~Cheers

Annoying to get working? It's as simple as clicking "Install" or dragging the folder into your mygames/ut3, which is tells you in a step by step procedure in the readme.

This mod might not even use the UDK, and if it does probably not for awhile. Why? Because it is also being developed for the PS3 version of UT3, which does NOT support UDK, unless the game will cost you money over PSN.

It's insulting to say you won't even try it because it isn't in the format you want, and because it is supposedly too difficult for you to install.

Really using the UDK it isn't modding anymore. You actually need to make more custom content to map, unlike the UT3 version of the editor, and there is less there pre provided for you to use and manipulate to your needs. A dedicated team will work wonders with it, but an young aspiring modder will have no direction, and will waste a lot of time figuring out what a group should, not an individual.

For the mods already far into development on UT3, the UDK will be their promise-land. For the new faces out there, unless you have a dedicated and experienced team out there, stick to the UT3 version until your mod is truly ready to bloom into a full fledge standalone game.

There's actually some really interesting discussion going on in there, although I like to stay away from the MODDB forums.

I personally would love their to be a subscription to moddb to get bonuses like: local and fast downloads directly from moddb, Ad removal, the ability to post larger res/filesize images and videos (possibly avatars), and maybe more control over the organization of your own profile. There could even be perks like getting to test the new version of the site before it is fully released to give feedback.

Anyways you bring up great points on the way ads are handled here. I don't know how many times I've used that desktop destruction utility and got the hammer tool and smashed the hell out of an ad that simply got under my skin, and wasted my precious time here on MODDB when I could be having a greater destiny.

A bit dramatic, but none the less I'd be behind the idea 100%. I'll be back to see if anything new has been posted!

I personally prefer PB far over VAC. I've never seen a VAN secured game that wasn't still chalked full of cheaters/hackers, exploiters, etc. It's as if it isn't even there, because most bans are done by admins and not servers themselves.

Although PB has a multitude of issues with certain OS and other hardware clashing, I find it has proved far more effective in getting rid of those who try to download their skill. Every PB update bans another few hundred people as they slowly but surely find new issues and deal with them.

Towards MW2, I just hope they can really strive to make the MP less of a rush and preemptive shots/grenades, and more of an actual teambased tactical shooter. Modding wasn't big in MW or WAW, mostly because of the tools, but from that we can vaguely expect there to be a large modding community for MW2.

You should recommend some anti-bug measures.

You know like, turn off autosave, because UTE likes to crash if autosave goes off during something like building. Another good one would be DO NOT UNDO a lot because if UTE runs out of undos, guess what? It crashes.

As powerful as it may be it still is a crash machine, and requires a lot of love and care in order to stay sane and not lose hundreds of hours of work at the hands of crash/corruption.

If you can't handle the game well, don't use AA. AF should never be above tri-linear for the same reason. Multicore rendering is SUPPOSED to help the game run if your using dual or quad core, and should work well, unless valve harshly sucks at coding. Only TF2 and L4D have that option so that could be apparent.

If those are causing crashing, then your video card can barely handle L4D, because if anything they should just lower your framerate.

The mapping is pretty good! I find the shrubbery could use some work for a more realistic feel to it.

The model definitely needs some work. A very low res and brushed texture definitely needs some work as well as a fairly low poly model. Overall it's not a bad start but definitely could see much improvement.

Fairly generic but not bad music theme. Until the overall theme comes together the music will remain kinda on its own. GW Mr Tom!

I love UT gameplay! Twitch shooters were all the rage back in UT GOTY and Quake 3 days, and into UT2K3 as well. The reason there is no hackers and 5 year old idiots is because the community is solid. There is no steam with hordes of groups its all forum and clan based, with each server building it's own community. Sure you can add friends but you hardly will ever do that while playing it. It isn't about who your playing with, it's about what your playing. <3 UT!

I don't like crytek because the modding capabilities are INCREDIBLY limited. Everything that you make on Crysis will LOOK like crysis, theres no getting away from it. The multiplayer supports NO AI, ruining half the mod ideas. I have a good enough computer and both Crysis (waste of my money for the garbage single player and garbage multiplayer :\) and Crysis warhead (gift ffs), as well as Farcry 2 (I liked the mutliplayer).

But, yeah, don't get me started with Crysis...

No back on old engines before 1990. 1995 had the N64 and the PS1, PS2, and games like starcraft and such came out, with HIGH QUALITY cinimatics, ranging from thousands of polys for each character.

450 tris was large for some PS1 game engines and old *** PC games, but even quake 2 can handle more in the right hands. Just because we developed more in the 90s then the rest of the 19th century combined does not mean everything was crap only 11-14 years ago XD.

I'm a mixture of white and native peoples so I'm not part of the white guilt folk who take racism too seriously. Most of my friends are not originally from Canada, or have parents from around the world, sos I can make fun of em.

Example: I could tell my friend had Irish or Swedish in him from the shape of his nose (I'm an artist, I notice these things), and I can tell what part of the UK someone is from by their accent.

No they really aren't too small.more then anything the head seems a bit too boxy with too little design on it, but for a first mech it's a fairly solid model. My best critic would be to add hinged on the main points of rotation parts to give it more function, and as most mechs have, the shocks (Usually air pressure) that allow the legs to move at such extreme distances.

I never feel that I'm being racists being born related to more then 4 different groups of people (Don't make me list em :\), it's just that white people are always scared to say anything about any other type of people. Get some multicultural friends it helps you rid yourself of this fear :D.

I still don't believe just because a map got more votes then a mod, a map wins a modding contest. It's just stupid.

Whats worse is the winner won a game engine, untouched. Whats a source mapper going to do with the torque game engine? He doesn't know how to do characters, coding, or really anything but map and possibly model, which he appears to be really goddamned good at. The dignity of this website has been grinded into dust.

Reading you blog and posting on this page: Unreal characters are super high definition, and can be VERY high poly. If you character modeler doesn't build in super high poly, build them to smooth (Very low poly to smooth results then tweaking), and that may help improve the overall quality of the models. The 2 materials allows the face to look very realistic, but keeping the rest of the body to a high grade of detail. 2048 X 2048 is 4 1024 X 1024 boxes is 4 512 X 512, etc So it's a LOT to work with. Never underestimate the UT3 engine :D. The character looks good but could use more detail, so go nutz! Make something "Unreal" haha. (I slap myself in the face every time I say that...)

Not to mention they all have kickass storylines with great characters.

Killing those damned American monsters at the end was horrendous even for high if not maxed level characters.

If someone has no life and scans for an avatar and name to - karma from on 3 pages then they really need to just grow up, get a life away from the computer, and understand just a small amount of respect. I don't state opinions just so someone can browse over it, read how much karma it has, then add to it depending if its already high or low. The karma system should really just be removed, so maybe devs can decide what opinions no one needs to see on moddb instead of the trolls.

Ha, bitter I like how I got spammed. I simply stated that EVERY first comment should NOT say "First comment!" in it. They always do, It's always spam, and it shouldn't happen, especially when its stated that one should not do this. Simply saying "First post! GL mods!" still is a spam waste of a post. It's not that complex of an idea to grasp, but your making it one. The main fact of the post is that he posted 6 seconds before I did and with barely an explanation other then to write "First post!" Understand yet?

Why am I doubting he really even PLAYED the map? How can you compare Stalkers world to this apocalyptic one? This map IS visually appealing with alot of details built onto the map without a horde of clutter and such thrown over every inch of the ground. Unless he made the map for a separate mod or anything of that sort it wont have any special base its being built from and therefore will be off on its on in any genre. Try not telling someone there maps should be like someone elses because you like them more, that's just ignorant and selfish.

Also the third screenshot is a corner of a staircase in what appears to be a train depot. It would be easy to tell UT3 over Quake 4 by the lighting they use and the style in general. The walls and floors have irregularities without going overboard and pulling up every 5th tile. How can you expect a 5 m X 5 m meter area to be as visually appealing as the bigger, more open parts of the map?

It has a single player, but its so survival based that its nearly impossible to win without some decent AI or good players watching your back. There IS not way to turn Left 4 Dead into a single player experience that doesn't have easily replaceable AI at your side at ALL times. Basically lining it up as a coop.

Co-op can be just as immersive as Single player when you play with a dedicated group of players. Left 4 Dead is a decent example. OblivionOnline will be a good example as well :D

Synergy, and other such coop mods and games can really make you feel like your there when everyone is reacting to whats going on in the game, and not just talking about random shite all the time. LAN helps really, but you can have a great Coop experience that would be far more satisfying then a SP experience, for the fact that you know you couldn't have got where you are without the dedicated teammates you had alongside you watching your back the entire way there. Diablo 3 will be another epic (SP and Coop, same thing, bter experience online :D)

OK subway train, but VERY nice layout with the lit signs and all. It looks more modern then futuristic to be honest, and it doesn't feel like a couple hundred people can be down there at once as there would be in many if not most subway stations in Japan NOW-adays.

same thing about being semi-bland with the flat to uneven look. Also again with the props (but I know its a WIP :D)

The hellfire red sky works well with the scene, and the view is nice.

The trees don't look right (the trunks meeting the ground), see if you can fix that to make them look more natural. Also the incredibly repetitive bricky texture near the back there (second from the right) is a bit blank looking as well.

(Without reading other reviews just some thoughts)

To be honest it felt like an alpha of what could become a full game, but that said, it is REALLY coming along. It didn't just feel like a mod alpha, as many UE early releases do.

I felt that more love went into the orbiting satallite, that Ion Blast, and the nuke cutscenes, then anything else, and it did play mostly like the UE multiplayer mod did, with the added diving (Definitely needed some work, but it did light up my day using it over and over for no good readon), and some tweaks here and there.

The AI needs a lot of work too but that should be obvious.

My biggest problem with it was the stamina bar refilling taking upwards of 10 seconds, but emptying taking less then 3. Sprinting barely added speed to begin with, so sometimes long trecks felt like a chore. The other major problem I had was weapon damage. The vehicle weapons, and the mounted weapons, did complete crap compared to the handheld weapons. By far the easiest weapon to use was the chaingun, it tore apart whole groups in seconds, but then the APCs machine gun took 5 seconds of shooting 1 guy to drop him.

Anyways it was a good first release, with solid graphics, decent animation, great effects, and laughable dialogue (Though that felt like the point), so I'd say you did a great job on this! Can't wait for multiplayer standalone!

I can tell the normals have been softened on the models due to the dark artifacts in the low poly pants. It feels like the only detail has been given to the head and hands, which really make it look weak as a character model.

How low are the polycounts on these characters? You should be worried HEAVILY about the silhouette of your low poly versions, or the normal map simply looks forced and wrong.

A) U use 3d max and a compiler. I use maya ULT 2009. :(
B) I'm not REALLY interested but I am a modeler and could be of some use but atm can not dedicate a mass of time to another project besides school (Although I can give great critic if you find a dedicated modeler). Also I happen to be a high poly modeler prof in the UT3 engine so it may not be the best for your needs.
C) Your mod looks very interesting. Might consider a watch on the next MDB frontpage update of it :D (get your mod on this site! It needs more BFME mods! Good ones at that!).

Good Luck in finding a modeler!

No these prices are truly fair. Maya 2009 ultimate pushes 4 grand a good deal. Once you understand what these programs are capable of and how much time and effort it took to even get it to a quarter of what it is now, you'll understand why it costs so much.

Remember both Maya and 3Ds have gone through nearly 2 dozen versions since the 90s.

This is more then "Just a program". Maya (3Ds is nearly the same now that autodesk bought it) can run a full built in physics sandbox as well as random effects, fully professional animations, models/textures/dynamic meshes for nearly ALL engines, as well as it's own rendering engine, and it also holds hordes of useful tools to do what would have taken months to do manually back in the day. I grew up using Flash MX, Maya 6.5, and Photoshop 7. My school runs CS4 for all adobe, and Maya 2009 as well as 3Ds Max 2009, Z-Brush, and all the video editing and 2D animation software one could dream of.

If you work professionally these programs are usually supplied, but if I had the money I'd get it in a flash.

And like Chada said, YES you do need an education to move to any professional level. Cheatseeker has posted on well over 100 profiles with a copy and paste of the help him mod if not then T.T crap.

When someone knows so blatantly little, I don't see why they came HERE to find information.

BTW he isn't talking about modeling. He's talking about MODDING. IN GENERAL. He's been spamming about using the RE4 engine and all this crap. You haven't seen HALF of it.

Apparently we don't know what a mod is haha.

Check the page, its a map map pack, plain and simple.

Here a quote "Dead Before Dawn is a campaign based off the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.". A modification of a game changes the game. DBD is an ADD-ON to the REGULAR game. All the ingame footage is a maphack used to put the AI director in but with NO scripted sequences. Why is it that moddb still doesn't know their left from their right? Quit trying to defend your stupidly wrong decisions that you've been miraculously pulling off in the past couple months. Yes obviously more then 30 MODDB HIGH RANKING (well low but you get what I mean) members were wrong and know nothing about modding, yeah like that's whats happening.

Fricken get a grip.

Part 2 ;D

MAPS: The gamemodes still don't seem straight forward enough. I can't tell if I gained a territory sometimes (Display doesn't always show) or it won't let me take one. Also it doesn't indicate if I'm actually taking it while I'm standing in location. Often I can't get to the enemy spawn before the game says "Flawless victory" and restarts suddenly without me having to do anything (Happens second in sometimes too). Gavannon (Untextured?) has horrid FPS in the red spawn, but I never tried blue. Cronus slightly cuts my FPS when viewing across the map and sometimes the sky randomly flickers black in some locations, but other then that it really is a beautiful map. It also says "Lighting needs to be rebuilt" still on it (Cronus). Nothing was wrong with Mythris besides that there was nowhere to cover because the corners usually had those large pillar-like wall pieces that blocked me most of the time from effective use of cover. I didn't seem to udnerstand how to take the territories either. (Could not tell if I did though it did restart a few times and tell me I'd won).

MENU: Main menu and loading looks great! As does the starting game picture via shortcut! Just a small mouse error occurs when moving the mouse over the text and it has the "Label text here" displayed when it first loads up. Just need to make it so only your gamemodes show up in instant action :D.

Very good release! My critic: Part 1

COVER: I really like the ability to take cover but it could use a bit of improvement, mainly in the ways that sometimes it covers my view of where I am shooting when I come out, and that I get stuck sometimes. Sometimes when I'm hit I come off cover and sometimes not.

GUNS + GAMEPLAY: There is no crosshair, I'm sure this was intended but for the rifle (5 shot) weapons it seems awkward to try to get kills with them. You should make your own customized controls menu so I can tell what each key is actually being set too, and maybe an aiming function so you can precision with some rifles. Another thing is to indicate what each firemode is. Some of the weapons seem to have none but still "click" when I press the firemode key as if they switched to something (Which I couldn't tell). Also need to add a leftover-ammo box to HUD or somewhere so one can see how much they have left. The guns need more variety in sound effects so I can tell the gun by the sound, for they currently sound too similar to eachother (Some are using the same sounds I'm sure). I know you will sometime add your own playermodels when they are done, which will help the theme a good amount. The HIT gun sometimes doesn't explode when it directly hits someone, making it take 3+ shots to kill. Some guns are untextured (Which I believe you already know). The basic shooting mechanics are quite solid though, specially once you memorize where your bullets are gonna go :D.

BOTS: Don't do much even on hard difficulties. They barely shoot and barely hit. They also follow the paths near exactly making their movements incredibly predictable.

I find it rather amusing that the only people who have PMed me at least had the decency to be under a rank of 500 so I can be guarantied a legitimate, respectful, if not comedic, response. (It really doesn't matter but its funny how the only people who have msged me have all been active moddb members and not random trolls throwing a fist or two at me haha).

Really the karma causes more issues then it resolves. Might as well get rid of it and let some active and intelligent admins decide what to bury in the comments.

*Cheers*
