I've recently researched and written an article regarding copyright infringement as it applies to modding (and, briefly, the legal repercussions of hosting copyright-infringing materials). I completed it with the input of several lawyers and a professional game designer.
I realize that the "soapbox" feature's establishment is probably not coincidental with the "IP in mods" debate and that the article may seem a good candidate for inclusion in the "soapbox" feature. However, as the article contains a much higher ratio of legal citation than opinion (it contains a singular conclusion that is the reflection of a multitude of statutes and legal precedents), putting it in an oped feature would tend to undermine the amount of research and professional input it includes. As a result I would only be willing to let it run as a feature.
I'm sure the staff and users of moddb.com are just as concerned as I am about the survivability of modding. Hopefully, understanding the legal repercussions of making and distributing copyright infringing materials will result in change for the better and help to ensure the survivability of modding for years to come.

Thanks for your time and consideration and I hope to see the article featured soon.

Continuing on the subject of people contacting you in reguard to joining our group who are not lone modders.
Is the person we are talking about here 'esfumato', if so you want to watch this guy as he is a bit underhand.
I was the one who put him on to you about our group as he contacted me saying could I vote in the awards for him as he was another lone modder & he had voted for me, but then I found out that he isn't a lone modder at all, he is just trying to get peoples votes any way he can. But it dosen't matter anyway, for even though I told him I had voted for him I didn't because I believe in voting for mods because you think that they are going to win, not because the modders have voted for you, & I hate it when people vote for you, just to get your vote, as it's not realy saying anything about my work.
But continuing on the subject of 'esfumato', I also posted a comment under the MONTY's start up news post saying I think there should be an award for lone modders, to which he left a message agreeing, but then further down the page he left a message saying that he disagreed, so I don't think he realy knows what he's going on about. He just seems like a bit of an idiot to me, but that's my opinion.
That's alright. It's obviously anime-inspired, so it doesn't matter. And I think the video is great. Lots of flippies and whatnot. I wouldn't worry about the video at all, because people do understand that using a regular ingame video recorder does produce some lag. So long as you mention it that's all that needs to be done. Keep up the great work. I like what I see! Quite impressive.
Will do :P
Yeh no worries mate, not really sure why people dont seem to like DCD its original and innovative...i guess that could be the reason a lot of people just want medal of honor clones (says me making a ww2 mod :s) but u know what i mean.
QUOTE:I've been getting a lot of weird LM join requests from ppl who seem unclear on the concept, ppl who have no mods listed under their profiles and ppl who are part of a team. I guess the group name is misleading somehow.
How clear does the name have to be, i.e LONE ( alone ), & MODDERS ( you make mods ), I don't think some people are playing with a full deck.
Perhaps we should call it, THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE MODS ON THEIR ONW & NOT WITH OTHER PEOPLE GROUP.....just jocking, but then you knew that as you've got some intelligence.
No, don't change the name as I don't think it can be any clearer, just change the subtext to more or less something like I put above, that should stop the wrong people bothering you about it.
No, once you've uploaded the files to the L4Y site, which is the site we are talking about, you no longer have access to that uploaded file on their server. Not even to delete it.
But thaks anyway....;)
wow mike u got a -15% influence score how did that happen lol? well that sux, hopefully see some updates from you soon.
I got 62% influence & 100% Karma, which is funny as I thought that my recent comments over the video servers were upsetting a lot of people.
Perhaps more people agree with me then I thought......:)
Thanks for the info but my video's aren't uploaded to my oficial web pages as I can't do this, as you can only upload the video's to the downloads section of a particual game itself & not to your web pages.
Also, you can't watch the video's from the site either, just download them to watch.
However, I've already uploaded my video's to this site & I have no real interest in uploading them to anywhere else, as there are 4 or them & it took so long to do.
Also, I think that you got me wrong when I was going on about the video servers, as my comment's weren'tabout me as I couldn't care less if my video's are showing or not as the game I mod for has very little following any more in the modding world so I have no illusions of winning either with or withoout a video. No, my comment's were far play for all modders.
But Cheers anyway mate......;)
It's looking pretty good. If you want an uber high quality video, if all else fails you can get a TV-Out cable, record it to DVD and then rip it from the DVD to your machine. Bit long winded and requires a DVD recorder though.
