I've recently researched and written an article regarding copyright infringement as it applies to modding (and, briefly, the legal repercussions of hosting copyright-infringing materials). I completed it with the input of several lawyers and a professional game designer.
I realize that the "soapbox" feature's establishment is probably not coincidental with the "IP in mods" debate and that the article may seem a good candidate for inclusion in the "soapbox" feature. However, as the article contains a much higher ratio of legal citation than opinion (it contains a singular conclusion that is the reflection of a multitude of statutes and legal precedents), putting it in an oped feature would tend to undermine the amount of research and professional input it includes. As a result I would only be willing to let it run as a feature.
I'm sure the staff and users of moddb.com are just as concerned as I am about the survivability of modding. Hopefully, understanding the legal repercussions of making and distributing copyright infringing materials will result in change for the better and help to ensure the survivability of modding for years to come.

Thanks for your time and consideration and I hope to see the article featured soon.

QUOTE:It does suck that the mods with vids get a head start:UNQUOTE
You realy think that this is just a question of a head start, & that somehow these other mods will be able to catch up. Do you know how many vots have been cast already.
It dosn't matter if INtence does stick too his word, it's too late now as the voting has already started & this problem should have been sorted before the awards begun.
On the subject of the prizes, I think the prizes are better this year, even though they might be fewer, as even if youra TOP100 winner you will still get something.....:)
Yea,
These awards are a bit of a farce this year, as they shouldn't have started them untill the video servers were up as it gives an unfair advantage to the modders that had already uploaded video's for their mods before the site switch over.
Also: the video servers ( & PM ), should have been the first things that they fixed after the switch over, yet they're still not working after some weeks now, & they seem more concerned about making flashy MOTY scoreboards that in the end don't amount to anything as it's not a true count of votes because if the video servers weren't down the votes might be very different.
How many votes have modders with no video's showing, lost out so far to other mods, as the video's might have swung the votes their way.
Yes it's true, modders can vote for more the one mod, but it's also a known fact that many modders don't.
Don't get me wrong as this is not just sour grapes on my part as I mod for Max Payne 1 & there's very little interest in mods or modding for it now, but there are mods out there that have been made on other engines that would stand a chance of winning if they were able to showcase their video's, & I think that all modders on this site should be treated fairly, so as I said these awards should never have been started untill this site was sorted out properly, or the site shouldn't have switched over before the awards had been & gone, one or the other.
I also feel sorry for the mod that dose win this year as it's going to be tarnish by the unfair voting, & their never know weither they would have truely been winners if the voting had of been fair.
But saying all this, no one else seem sto have the balls to say something about the situation, so I don't think I'll bother anymore either....:(
p.s. also if you ever need ne tips or pointers on UED mapping etc i can put you in touch with some great guys on my mod team. Just let me know if theres anything you need.
Thnx! I'll probably be taking you up on that offer throughout the next few weeks. I've had a couple of questions lately, but for the most part I've just gone without implementing the features that I couldn't get to work. It'll be nice to get some answers. :) Thnx again!
thx for the reply, ill take a quick look when i get home from work, i wouldn't worry about skills dropping off :D once u learn this stuff it doesn't take much time for it to get back. I just got zbrush 3 so i'm gunna go tutorial hunting this weekend. I'll post up some links on what i find, to be honest the best ones ive found are on the zbrush website and forums themselves. Best of luck with the mod mate :). Never tried cel shaded textures, sounds like fun.
Hey mike, noticed in the 3d modellers group you said you had never used zbrush! its awesome you should really give it a go, can take anyones models to the next level and doing detail work is easier than in max or maya, although my 3d modelling is basic at best i found it easy to use. Anyway just thought i'd give you some input.
Sorry about that last post, I didn't know you couldn't put addresses, even if there not embeded, anyway to find Maddieman just go to my friends list.
Thanks for asking me to join your New group for lone modders mate, I wonder why I never thought of that.
Anyway, I've got another good pal on this site called Maddieman thats also a lone modder, his pages can be seen at Moddb.com you might want him to join also.
Thanks again, & all the Best.
