I've recently researched and written an article regarding copyright infringement as it applies to modding (and, briefly, the legal repercussions of hosting copyright-infringing materials). I completed it with the input of several lawyers and a professional game designer.
I realize that the "soapbox" feature's establishment is probably not coincidental with the "IP in mods" debate and that the article may seem a good candidate for inclusion in the "soapbox" feature. However, as the article contains a much higher ratio of legal citation than opinion (it contains a singular conclusion that is the reflection of a multitude of statutes and legal precedents), putting it in an oped feature would tend to undermine the amount of research and professional input it includes. As a result I would only be willing to let it run as a feature.
I'm sure the staff and users of moddb.com are just as concerned as I am about the survivability of modding. Hopefully, understanding the legal repercussions of making and distributing copyright infringing materials will result in change for the better and help to ensure the survivability of modding for years to come.

Thanks for your time and consideration and I hope to see the article featured soon.

Yeh unfortunately that seems to be the nature of the internet (your current situ on this site i mean). The threat basically centred around the release date of our mod and a major US college. I'm not sure i should say more but it was a pain in the backside. Sorry to hear your stuck for another 7 months im fed up of 3am starts atm its killing me.
BOO!,
geeze its been a long time sorry for my absence mate once again real life is being a pain. the New job is great. As far as the mod goes basically what happened was is i got some death threats around xmas i just thought it was some kid messing around, now im not so sure. then about 3 weeks ago we had someone post a bomb threat on our website which sucked. Had to report it to the police ended up getting questioned all day to help them find the guy. Then last week our mod got hacked into they a build from our ftp and messed up our forums and website. So its been a rough few weeks mod wise. Hows things with u?
lawl, misinform eh? well sometimes you just can't change people's minds on subject matters.
Hey btw, if you ever need any sound work i'd love to help out with the mod. I'm not gonna be your end all solution for sound but at least it might get things moving a bit.
You tell 'em mike!
lol, thnx. :)
Yeah that was interesting. I think that you should make your own material. For our mod First Contact, everything is ours except stuff which CryTek allow you to use such as the water, flame, waterfalls and smoke effects integrated into the engine. All assetts, textures, sounds, etc were our own. We also asked persmission to release it for download, and they had no problems with it.(Had we had more time and more than one coder we would have coded our own effects too.) I think that if a company releases an engine with an editor, it is ok to use what comes with that editor. What I don't like is when people use other Ip like the Marvel characters case. That's definately wrong. I just want to see more originality now to be honest.
yeh i'll post some pics up once im all moved in...sounds like they got u in a cell mate.
Yep, it feels like it too.
not buying a house atm just took a 12 month lease out while i house hunt so to speak while the market is down. reading your article now it makes for an interesting read....and i would suggest that you never grow up lol house hunting isnt fun and it makes my wallet hurt.
