We here at Dark Synergy Studios are seeking a talented 3D Character Artist to work on Wake Up Call, one of the first games powered by Unreal Engine 4. If you have skills and want to get in on the ground level of a game that is going to make it to market, read on.
Why Unreal Engine 4?
We have a very exclusive deal with Epic to develop Wake Up Call on Unreal Engine 4. Epic is working directly with us so that we can make a great game. This is an extremely exclusive opportunity, not only to work with next-gen technology, but also to work directly with a company like Epic Games. This makes Wake Up Call one of the first next-gen indie games to be produced, and we are truly humbled by this opportunity. Unfortunately, I cannot discuss the specifics of the engine or our relationship with Epic Games publicly, but those who apply will be able to learn more about this.
What do we have so far?
We have completed our pre-production phase, and we are in the early production phase on bringing Wake Up Call to UE4 from UE3. The World Reveal Trailer we released recently is just the tip of the iceberg, and there will be much more to come in the near future.
What is the funding plan?
The plan is to work up some hype while we finish building our UE4 gameplay demo. Then we will take Wake Up Call to Kickstarter in order to raise somewhere around $50-60k to hire on the core team full-time. After getting funded, we will use the money to finish a fully-playable alpha demo that is ready to go on Steam Early Access. The release on Steam Early Access will give us additional income with which to continue development through to completion (sometime in early 2015).

Being a flagship title for Unreal Engine 4 has many perks, including access to next-gen technology before anyone else, and incredibly high-end graphical and gameplay power that blows many other Indies out of the water. It may not seem like much to developers, but our fans have told us again and again that Unreal Engine 4 is amazing. We have also just been Greenlit for Steam, and we have a lot of momentum in our favor right now, so now is the best time for you to join up.
On top of the raw potential of the game, we also have a very talented and dedicated team with members who have worked on many games, indie and AAA, including Contagion and Killzone 3, and the average team member has been with us for over nine months. Needless to say, you can rest assured that there will not be any team-related crises that cripple development.
What is Wake Up Call?
Kyle quickly gets sucked into an alien Earth where conflict has broken out between the tyrannical Kalders and The Scarred, a guerrilla resistance group. Little do the factions of the world know, a massive station full of thousands of humans locked away in cryostasis lies beneath the ground, shrouded in mystery, and it won’t be long before Kyle realizes that the secrets of this world are far more dangerous than what caused The Collapse in the first place.
Our vision with Wake Up Call is simple: create a high quality, immensely immersive experience that any and all sci-fi fans need to experience. We want to take atmosphere to a whole new level. Everything in the world has a story, everything reacts to your choices in game, and everything fits into a larger conflict that no one will see coming. The story will keep you, the player, on your toes constantly, while gameplay makes sure to take a few breaks here and there to let you relax and take in the impressive view. Once you finish the game, we want you to go back and see what different choices you could have made, take new routes through our sandbox levels, or even just to immerse yourself in the experience again.
What are we looking for
We are looking for a talented Concept Artist and Programmer who are willing to put in an average of 10-15 hours per week. While we cannot offer up-front payment, you are entitled to compensation via royalties on game sales (after release) and/or via getting hired on the team after we get properly funded.
We are also only interested in applicants that are already good at what they do; we cannot afford to spend time on beginners. That means we are looking for people with generally 2-3+ years of experience in their field (not necessarily development experience though, learning/school is OK too). However, we are looking primarily at the strength of the applicant's previous work, so do not take the years of experience part as a necessity -- some people do amazing work after just one year of learning, and that is OK. Professional experience is a bonus.
For Concept Artists:
Experience with sci-fi art style is a necessity, and we are looking primarily for concept artists that are comfortable with characters and environments. Experience with more than one type of concept art (eg. Characters and vehicles) is a bonus. Additionally, your experience can come from movies/cinematic concept art and does not necessarily have to be games experience. Skill in other art disciplines such as animation or modeling is also a big bonus. Regardless, you must exercise an extreme attention to detail in all of your work.
Game programming experience is a necessity. While we do not require applicants to have professional game experience, we do require applicants to have significant game programming experience from somewhere. We are also only interested in applicants who are already fluent in C++. Experience with Unreal Engine 3 (UDK)/Unrealscript experience is a HUGE bonus, since UE4’s code structure is similar in many ways to UE3. We are looking for versatile programmers who are excited about learning to work with UE4.
