We here at Dark Synergy Studios are seeking a talented Concept Artist to work on Wake Up Call, one of the first games powered by Unreal Engine 4. If you have skills and want to get in on the ground level of a game that is going to make it to market, read on.

Why Unreal Engine 4?
We have been using Unreal Engine 4 since November 2013, 5 months before it went public in March, and as such have gained quite a bit of experience with the engine. Ultimately, we made the switch to UE4 from UE3 for the better pricing structure and because the UE4 toolset is simply far superior.

The World Reveal Trailer is just the tip of the iceburg and should be viewed purely as a teaser, not indicative of final game quality at all.

What is the project status?
Wake Up call is currently in the pre-alpha stage, working on a target demo to show to our publisher/investor contacts or potentially to run a Kickstarter campaign. We are implementing core features of the game as we ramp up for this demo, including (and not necessarily limited to): various free-running moves, core stealth features and AI, and various other undisclosed features.

What is the funding plan?
Wake Up Call is currently a game being made out of the passion of the talented developers involved using most of their spare time for this incredibly exciting project. That said, we don't plan on staying that way forever, and we are going to be shopping our demo around to our publisher/investor contacts once it's ready (later this Summer). If we come up empty, then we will likely go to Kickstarter to raise some initial funding to get us off the ground and go from there.

What is Wake Up Call?
Wake Up Call is a next-generation sci-fi stealth-action shooter with a heavy emphasis on choice-driven gameplay and story in a unique and atmospheric post-apocalyptic world. Wake Up Call follows Kyle Rogers, an ex-special operations soldier who has been awakened after one hundred and fifty years of cryostasis sleep.

Kyle quickly gets sucked into an alien Earth where conflict has broken out between the tyrannical Kalders and The Scarred, a guerrilla resistance group. Little do the factions of the world know, a massive station full of thousands of humans locked away in cryostasis lies beneath the ground, shrouded in mystery, and it won’t be long before Kyle realizes that the secrets of this world are far more dangerous than what caused The Collapse in the first place.

Our Vision:
Our vision with Wake Up Call is simple: create a high quality, immensely immersive experience that any and all sci-fi fans need to experience. We want to take atmosphere to a whole new level. Everything in the world has a story, everything reacts to your choices in game, and everything fits into a larger conflict that no one will see coming. The story will keep you, the player, on your toes constantly, while gameplay makes sure to take a few breaks here and there to let you relax and take in the impressive view. Once you finish the game, we want you to go back and see what different choices you could have made, take new routes through our sandbox levels, or even just to immerse yourself in the experience again.

What are we looking for?
We are looking for a talented Concept Artist with generally at least 2-3 years of experience in the concept art field. This experience does not need to be professional, but it is preferred. Your experience level will largely be judged by your portfolio, so as long as your portfolio is strong, you have a good shot at making the team. You will be expected to put in roughly 15-20 hours/week.

We are looking for the following skills:

  • Experience working with sci-fi art styles.
  • Strong sense of realism-based design, form, and structure.
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Exceptional team skills and the ability to harness constructive criticism, work with other team members directly, and provide your own constructive criticism for others.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • And of course, a passion for gaming, particularly the stealth/action genres.

The following are bonuses for us:

  • Previously shipped a AAA/Indie title as a Concept Artist.
  • Experience in multiple kinds of concept art (eg. environment and character art).
  • Understanding of environment modularity.
  • Experience in one or more related disciplines: 3D Art, Animation, etc.
