It's not even courage. It's the sudden realisation that your enemy won't take prisoners and you will die anyway, so you might as well take as many (if any) as you can with you.
Imperial Guardsmen do not fight for The Emperor, they fight for their lives; they will be killed by their superiors if they don't sacrifice themselves. That is why they can be just as lethal as any Space Marine.
normally the equation is 1 SM = 100 Guardsmen, but yeah... any guardsman can kill any enemy if they get lucky (that is, if the Emperor is watching over them... luck being a heretic conspiracy and all...)
There was a person who lifted a whole helicopter about a metre off the ground at one end to save his friend, who otherwise may have drowned in a mud pool. So, yeah, humans can be superhuman given the direness of the situation.
at the first glance the guardsman looked scared but when i look closely, i can see that he's grimacing like he's ready for a fight and implying: come at me, traitor!
Looking closer at hi sword, it looks more like a cross between a power and chainsword. Sheet, what have the Cadians been cooking up in their manufactorums?
Has anyone stopped to think that the perspective might just be because the enemy is on a gantry/catwalk/some other factory-type walkway suspended in the air?
Perhaps this guardsman isn't so worried about the size of the opponent, as they are preparing to dodge the goomba-stomp and run forward while the Chaos Mario-ine is still finishing their attack animation?
Perhaps the most cruel and evil game design oversight ever has become an Imperial tactic for shipboarding combat?!?!?
some one has some balls
its called courage...and he is dam brave to face an enemy twice as big and superior

actually one space marine equals 20 normal men

If the Emperor watches over a Guardsman's dice rolls and gets sixes all the time, he might as well be the next Macharius.
dude i got lucky once and calgar died to a laspistol volley
i killed abaddon in melee with one guardsmen.

This, this is what makes the Imperial Guard just as worthy of respect as any Astartes.
Yet they are so expendable.
The fact that they know that and still fight against the odds of the 41st Millenium is part of what makes them so damn awesome.
well of course they are, their numbers compared to that of SM is an insane difference.

I believe conscripts fight for the lives but guardsmen who enlist themselves actually fight for the emperor.
