i would like an opinion from you guys, most of you are very intelligent and know what you are talking about whether your views be conservative or liberal
The situation in Syria has now escalated to the point where the UN has declared them to be in civil war, and the UN Court has charged Bashar al-Assad's government with crimes against humanity and crimes against children. No one can disagree that this is intolerable, so now comes the question of what do we do.
-do we intervene only slightly as we did in libya, which limits American loss of life but does little to affect the civil war
-full intervention, which will cost unknown numbers of casualties and will like turn into another afghanistan
-Do nothing, anyone who knows anything about history knows that sanctions are stunningly ineffective, and anyone who knows anything about the current state of Europe and the east knows that Europe is incapable and unwilling to go to war, and the Russians have been cvonfirmed to be helping Assad's government, the Chinese will also not be joining us as their eyes are elsewhere.
As some of the most intelligent people in the moddb community i would just like to ask your opinion, no trolling, or flag waving, but i would like honest opinions, intervention, or look the other way. I would like to point out that last time we looked the other way at genocide and tried to keep our neutrality, 50 million people ended up dying
To answer that question let me ask you this:
Is it better to do what is convenient or what is right?
It isn't our business unless there is an obvious threat to US citizens
Maybe we could get lucky and Turkey will sort them out. They already had an incident with Syria downing one of their planes. Syria's neighbors are growing more concerned and angry about their civil war spilling over it's borders...
Some intervention will produce the least casualties but the longest term of instability.
Full intervention will start another unintentional genocide like Afghanistan's.
None will draw the conflict out, increasing deaths, but not causing as many that would be caused by a foreign military force. Also giving time for factions to become actual factions beyond simple small groups of armed angry people.
i agree, i just wish it wasnt always the United States intervenes or no one does, its not fair that we have to pick between our soldiers and Syrian civilians, i pick our soldiers every time but it still isnt fair
A nation cannot win a war when its enemy isn't a nation or a heavily organized faction, especially when this disorganized faction is foreign. When you are fighting rebels, you can do nothing but gun them down because they will not hesitate to die for their cause.
Korea - Still shitsville with the majority of the country without electricity and an overwhelming majority never even have heard of what an internet is. (Kim Jong Il's dead, but now his ******** son is in charge, so prepare for global thermo-nuclear war. Deja Vu to anyone following Cuba).
Vietnam - Not bad, but still needs plenty of work with industrialization. They've introduced Capitalistic ideals with their Communist ideals, so it's really an either way situation on their future ideals.
Iraq - Major overhaul needed after the complete destruction of most of the country, but war will never truly end in the middle east, because they've been warring for thousands of years, and it won't change anytime soon, and by the way, WE were the ones who put Saddam Hussein into power.
Afghanistan - Basically the same as Iraq, but even more ****** up with the Taliban out for American blood because we abandoned them after they took over the Afghan government, and fought back the Reds. For some reason though, we thought it was a good idea to go back, forgetting the main thing that if the RUSSIANS quit a war, it's unwinnable, because they had plenty of lives to send, and plenty of excuses to come up with.
Libya - Not much to say other than we now have a rebel government that's too incompetent to efficiently a country raped from war. Just watch it go the same way as Afghanistan, and an Islamic extremist group will take control of the country with a worse regime than before, and be after us for leaving them.
Syria - The war has already begun.
What are you talking about? South Korea is and has been advancing rapidly since the war. Compared to the rest of east Asia South Korea really only falls behind China and Japan when it comes to wealth and technical advancement. And China is only becoming so powerful economically at the expense of their own people's lives. The civilian labor force in China is paid next to nothing and are forced to work long hours in obscene conditions. All to make cheap and usually defective goods to saturate the global markets with...
Yeah North Korea is still a dump but what more do you expect from a country that's been run by a xenophobic communist dictatorship for the last half century?
North Korea has insufficient arable land to provide adequate amounts of food for its populace, and far too many sanctions cutting it off from the world disallow the country to function properly. Thusly, from constant threats and the above North Korea has effectively been driven insane. Well done.
The slaughter of Southeast Asia where uncountable millions died to young trained killers without a cause, bombs, and famine caused by those bombs.
Iraq, pointless. At the benefit of removing a once US supported dictator who killed off villages of a rival faction of Islam in the north with chemical weapons, the entire country was dissolved into chaos, it's armies were decimated, and now well over a hundred thousand civilians are dead as a result.(Democracy yey, dead people, not so good)
Afghanistan, pointless as well. That conflict is now nothing more than confused villagers fighting foreign occupiers. A poll issued a year or two ago found that 90% of the people there don't even know why the US is around shooting at people and wiping villages out of existence.
Libya, regime change for resources. Country now in chaos as well.
(Also, the west was jealous of his fabulous fashion sense.)
Syria, soon to be bombed or official support given to the rebels which have been reportedly committing war crimes such as killing large groups of people. Also recently a news reporter who was in Syria was set up to get killed by government forces by rebels they were with to blame the government. Gladly he survived and lived to tell the tale along with everyone else in the vehicle.
