Are the old game engines crappy?

Almost anything is fair game for The Soap Box, providing it meets Mod DB's terms of use, stays within the area of gaming (Or issues affecting gaming), and doesn't offend. We'd also advise against naming specific companies or people in your articles, just talk about the subject at hand and most people will be able to guess who or what you're talking about.
If you're discussing something to do with laws, be aware that there are different countries in this world and not all of them have the same rule book. Make sure it's clear what you're talking about if you mention specific laws or national regulations.
Try again kiddo, you've still got to follow the rules. This isn't a free for all, this is just the place to write about your opinions on matters affecting gaming. Flames, deliberate trolling and the like are liable to earn you a ban.
We're more likely to check this group for thought-provoking front-page material. Simple really.
Easy - either click here to create a new article which is ready to go, or get an old article and link it to this group. As simple as that.

Scott McCloud's "six steps of creation" have been a revelation to me. Here's why they ought to be for you as well.
What does the future hold for the design of computer games? With ever improving technologies will new ways to play games affect the design of games?

I have a question, but one I don't think quite big enough for a feature.
I was just thinking about Civilization IV. The game is designed to have a very easy built in world editor, dubbed the 'world builder'. Now when buying the game, I considered this to be a great feature. However, after I owned the game, I found it, while fun to use, quite annoying. Whenever I got into a tough spot in a game, I was instantly tempted to use the world editor to get myself out of it.
So my question is this: What do you think the importance (or lack thereof) is in the seperation of the actual game and its corresponding editor?
by that do you mean that the editor and game should not be connected? also, control your temptation, i could start acting like a complete jackass and start flaming, but im not going to. just get some self control.
anybody hear how the there is going to be an updated versions to the new nvidia geforce GTX 200 series called the 200b? appearently this GPU is going to be manufactured on a 55nm process like the new 9800 GTX+ coming out next month (current GTX 280s and 260s are manufactured on the 65nm process) and will be far more efficient than the GTX 280s and 260s just released on the 27 of june. all i can say is im glad i waited to buy my GTX 280! on another note nvidia needs to get its stuff together as far as driver releases, its been one pain after another with their recient drivers and I've resorted to some earlier drivers (162.50 modded by XG). if i didnt love Nvidia's visusal quality so much I'd have resorted to ATI long ago, but I only can hope that when i do get my new nvidia card in sept, nvidia has figured out how to release a decient driver set.
I thought the idea of this group was that it was advertised on the front page. I may as well have written a blog if it all stays private.
I think... maybe is good, because the people can read it and get an idea of the objetive of the Soap Box. And, who knows maybe another member want talk about it
Nope, because features are automatically brought to our attention for front page placement and this is the a group you can add them to without needing to find a really specific 'target' group such as graphic artists, <engine> developers and so on. This is a general "I've got something to ramble about, here's my proper piece on it" group whereas blogs are more "quick comment".
I want a new topic. I am to lazy to think of one myself.
Maybe you can talk about... hmm... Why the people become crazy with the FPS games? I don't know, I'm lazy too
Ha you have given me a great topic. Now to flesh it out a little and write the article.
NEEDS MOAR SOAP!
Ok soap coming up.
AGREED!
