Yeah US tank naming can be confusing sometimes. If an American tank has the letter "T"(stands for Trial/Test) in it's name that means it's an experimental or prototype. Similar to the Russian practice of calling experimental vehicles "Object".
If it has the letter "M"(Model) in it's name it means it was officially accepted for service by the military and mass produced. Example: The M26 Pershing was designated T26 before it finished trials and got approved by the military.
Also American tanks almost never have a - in their name like Russian tanks do. For example everyone knows the Russian "T-34" medium tank from WWII. But the US also had a "T34" of their own, which was an experimental heavy tank.
