P.S. The T72 where made to be low profile , to be a hard target to hit over the distance, thats the main reason why the T72 is much smaller than the M1.

i agree. at long distances even with advanced radar and targeting systems the t-72 still would be a hard target but it may be on par with the m1a2 on close quarters combat. still i'd vote for the abrams. it is one of the world's most advanced tanks and has armor 1-foot thick.
You can't really compare a T-72 to an Abrams , The Abrams is comparable with the Russian T90 , Since both the T-90 and Abrams are more Modern .
The T-90 could challenge the M1-Abrams.

M1A1 Abrams - same time than T-72B
M1A2 Abrams - same time than T-72BM
Iraq T-72M - it's export version of T-72A, with old ammunition.

yes i am whith sting2 but if you compare the t-72 is the best not the big is best the small and the speed and the strong is the best for me i support the russian tank and the germans.
what was the tank used by Iraq in the last war? I heared they had 100 of them in a line (the pre-1900 tactic) and like 10 abrams wiped them all out without any casulties, but im really not sure if this is true :S
Iraq army have old T-72M and M1 version, with old ammunition.
Let's start from the beginning. US tanks have equipment for destruction of tanks from the distances more that 3000 km, at night, in mist, during dust storms, etc. Iraqi ones don't have it. That's why most of iraqi tanks were destroyed from giant distances. BUT! What we are talking about? Are there iraqi tanks destroyed by M1s? Sure, nobody confute it. But the main thing is, that US sources try to convince everyone that almost ALL these tanks were destroyed by US tanks. We know that it is not true. Most of them were destroyed by aircraft, TOWs and ship's artillery. My arguments:
1) After their fire any tank will look like a piece of crap. Search the NET. If you find a foto of destroyed T-72, most likely it will look like huddle of battered rubbish. And almost no destroyed tanks with HOLES in armor. You can also find tanks disabled by iraqi tank troopers.
2) Neither in USA, nor in Israel there were no captured T-72 until 1987. They bought them in Eastern Europe.

And one more thing. USA used nearly million of uranium shells during Operation Desert Storm. Million of shells to destroy even friggin 4000 tanks - not very good rate.
3000 km? are you sure about that? I don't think an M109 paladin can shoot that far.

thats brutal that the world 4. greatest tank division was crushed over 1-2 months with less than 1000 abrams
And what was brutal about that? Most of Iraqi export monkey model of T-72M and M1 was destroyed from AIR.. and ones who meet M1 Abrams in combat was not even match to Soviet basic T-72B without reactive armor.
Also the Abrams didn't do most of the destroying in Desert Storm.
It was mainly aircraft that did the most of killing.
