Simcardo, those are wire mesh skirts, and they are the grandfather of cage armor like dealta.boy said, since they had the same purpose. Zimmerit was a coating that prevent magnetic mines to attach to the tank, and that panzer iv in the pictures does not have zimmerit

Panzerschürzen are kinda like cage armor. They were used by wehrmachts panzer to reduce the impact and kenetic energy a shell has to make it less capable of defeating armor. cage armor has a similar prinziple. so that might be the WW2 grandfather
