A shuttle lands at one of the designated landing pads for the party. Lok exits the shuttle, taking in the sight of the festivities. He wondered what would be in store for the Empire.

The large palatial doors closed, indicating to late comers that their opportunity to participate in the festivities was forgone.

While there were many guests at the party, only a handful were of notable importance and they stood out like a sore thumb among the predominantly humanocentric and regally clad Imperials; the diminutive countess Falkyria, the red-skinned Lok, a handful of Enclave knights and minor Tionese nobles.

Said countess was doing her best to avoid making her hatred of people apparent; being alone was her preference but Falkyria realized it was also wise to create and maintain influential connections with the upper class and this was the perfect occasion to do so.

She marked up her target; Lok, the most alien-looking alien in the palace. Observe, prepare and pounce once possible.

Lok didn't mingle as much as the others at the party, as he was only there since it was requested by the Empress. He was mostly just talking to those of higher rank, where any kind of alliance could be beneficial to himself and the Enclave.

Deep down he was loathe to be at this party, secretly wishing he was back at the temple, uncovering more secrets. It didn't take him long to notice that he was being watched. Normally he could tell people were staring because of his unique appearance, but something was slightly different here.

Lok was right, he was being watched but not just by the countess but also an old friend of his; Azrael.

"Well, if it isn't my dear brother. It's been a long time."

The countess maintained her distance, listening in. How the blazes did this man escape being tried and executed for treason?

Lok turned at the sound of the familiar voice, his mouth shifting to a small smile.

"Azrael my old friend, it has been too long indeed. I must admit I am surprised to see you here."

He could still feel those eyes on him.

"Eavesdropping isn't becoming of you, countess. You're far too conspicuous."

Azrael stated over his shoulder, much to the chagrin of said countess. Falkyria swallowed her pride and turned to face that damnable Sith Lord and the Enclave agent with a modest smile.

Play it off.

"Ah, Lord Azrael. I thought it was you. Good seeing you again, I thought for sure some terrible fate would have befallen you after what happened on the Judicator."

"You didn't recognize me? How many Sith waltz around with cloaks and masks? Wait, don't answer that."

Falkyria chuckled lightly. This man was annoying and a waste of time to deal with but at least she had inserted herself into the conversation now, time to garner some support with the agent of the Enclave.

Lok observed the countess, she looked like the sort of person that could very easily stay away from attention if she wanted to, but it appeared she lacked practice against those well versed with the power of the force.

"Greetings Countess, I am Lok, lord of the Eternals and envoy of the Enclave. It seems you're an acquaintance of my friend here. I don't believe I got your name."

"Salutations, my lord. I am countess Freya Falkyria zi Starkroße, lieutenant with the Imperial navy. Pleased to finally meet you."

The Sith Lord Azrael was quick to interject with a bit of mocking at the expense of the young Imperial officer.

"I didn't know you were a fan, countess."

Whatever frustrations boiled up inside Falkyria; none were visible on her countenance. This was actually an opportunity to display some of her intellect and gain an advantage over Lok, despite his mysterious background.

"No, I wouldn't call myself a fan. More of an admirer. It takes guts to take off with Imperial property and an admiral, such actions certainly give someone a degree of infamy. How is my former colleague?"

*Major Kain Talus arrived to the party late, but not making much of a scene due to being relatively unknown, save for a few glances of recognition and nods. A few lesser KDY stock holders were here attempting to gain favor with any of greater status, which there seemed to be very few of. He composed himself and strode over with an air of confidence and started conversing with the stock holders, and he them all by name.

The oldest man, in his fourties, nodded as he approached. "Major Talus, it is a pleasure to see you again. I am truly sorry for the loss of your father. He was a great man." The man exclaimed, in a gloomy voice.

Kain drifted off in thought, still not completely over the loss of his father, yet he displayed no emotion and simply nodded.

"Thank you for your condolences, Jeromy. It was a tragic and unexpected loss, however my father taught me well and I am confident in my abilities to be a proper successor." Kain replied, the same confidence he had walking over apparent in his voice.

The other two men offered their condolences as well and they gossiped and chatted about the latest news and rumors from around the Empire, such was the way it was between people of this status.*

"Well, I do suppose it would take the same amount of guts as it would to commit treason against an Emperor.

Lok took a sip of his drink after saying that.

"Well, she is doing very well in the Enclave, the Empress holds her in high esteem."

He turned to Azrael.

"Tell me friend, what is a man like you doing in a place like this? I do hope it is for more than antagonising this lovely lady."

"Antagonize? Me? Never!"

The repulsive Sith chuckled to himself. Falkyria, not amused, did not validate his weird sense of humour and instead glanced sidelong into the distance with a degree of boredom.

"In fact, I admire our young countess over here."

Falkyria's ears burned at the mention of those select and specific words, her interest peaked and she returned her attention to Azrael. Surprise was written across her face. If this was a joke it was in very poor taste.

"You see, I am here on a mission of my own. I'm always on the lookout for talented individuals such as Freya. Young, eager, ambitious, intelligent."

"Ah, high praise coming from Azrael. He may not look like it, but he has a good eye for these things. Perhaps I shall follow your career with great interest."

*Kain continued conversing politely with the three men, all of whom had a surprisingly good deal of knowledge concerning the drive yards. He filed the information away and thought perhaps that maybe they could come in hand at some point in the future, which was filed away as well.

While conversing he scanned the room for any individual of note, and his eyes settled on a pair of sith and he almost spat in disgust. He held his composure and simply scanned the rest of the room yet found no one as interesting as these two. He did not stare as he did not want to attract any attention, instead he tried to deduce who the young woman beside them was, clearly not afraid of being so close to two deadly beings.

He went back to focusing on the conversation at hand and continued simply nodding at what they had to say.*

The young Imperial officer tried to process the compliment from the two Sith. It didn't take long for her to reach several conclusions and craft wild theories behind the meaning of the praise offered by these two.

But rather than dwell on it in awkward silence, it was probably better to say something.

"Thank you, both of you."

These were Sith, both of them, manipulators and egotists playing a game involving her as some sort of pawn to raise their personal power. It made the most sense, it is in their nature and it made her livid. If it were in her ability to do so she'd wipe them all out in a heartbeat.

Falkyria cracked an insincere smile.

"But I'm afraid you're mistaken. I'm a simple lieutenant, I'll serve the Empire and retire to a peaceful, quiet life."

The emotional turbulence the little countess experienced did not go unnoticed by Azrael, his Enclave counterpart probably sensed the same. The contrast between her words and emotions were confusing but also extremely amusing to the viscous Lord of the Sith, Azrael.

"Come now, Freya, you need to learn how to take a compliment."

"Oh my, a humble Imperial, a rare breed indeed. Still, I'm certain you have a bright future ahead of you. Unless of course you're putting up an act to keep the higher ups happy, you wouldn't be the first."

Falkyria had great discord within her mind. It was becoming clearer to Lok that her true personality had not been revealed to him. He wondered what was going on in that head of hers.

*The conversation finally reached its point of fullness, no one having any thing else constructive to add with out going into more darker topics. This suited well as he was quite content and knew his new found friends might come in hand one day, perhaps sooner than he wished..

He once again caught himself looking over at the two sith, his anger sweeping through his body. The thought of his father saddened him deeply, but he steeled his resolve and buried the feelings. He would get his revenge, in due time.*

"At this point, my lord, is there any difference? This is the state of the galaxy I'm afraid. Nepotism, cronyism, blatant favouritism. It rules the day and at this point, everyone has to sink to such deplorable means to get ahead of life, with very few exceptions."

Azrael cackled slightly. The girl was on the right track to a certain, familiar line of thought that both he and Lok would recognize and understand more than anyone. The countess was not amused by the Sith's laughter.

"Well then, Freya."

She was getting sick of being called that.

"What would you suggest? That power is to be earned and that the strong should rule over the weak?"

"I suggest you set yourself a goal and then go for its throat, clawing your way to victory."

"How very... Sith-like."

Lok said with a chuckle.

"Even so, there have been many without force affinity capable of achieving great things with that mindset. I wonder if you have what it takes."

And with that, Her true self began to make itself more clear to Lok. Her words betrayed a ruthlessness she was clearly trying hide.

Lok noted other eyes on him, and could feel the hatred behind them. He ignored it for now.

*Kain decided it was best time to meet the two sith, and years of practice of hiding his true feelings and emotions allowed him to bury his seething hatred extremely deep. It barely felt like a flutter in his conscience.

He walked over to them with the same confidence he had walking in and introduced himself.

"My lords," He exclaimed, bowing slightly to them both. "It is a pleasant surprise to see two sith lords at a gathering such as this, intrigiung indeed." Kain continued not quite finished.

"I am Major Kain Talus of Naval Intelligence, at your service." He finished, bowing slightly again. His face was neutral save for the easily faked smile on his face.*

Falkyria gazed off into the distance, disinterested in this individual. Having a connection in Naval Intelligence won't do her much good anyway when the real people in power are elsewhere, this organization is just a drain on funds.

Meanwhile, Azrael was amused by the thinly veiled attempts by this contemptible Imperial to hide his true nature. He was trained to conceal, but stupid at maintaining a low profile.

"Ah, finally some service. I'll have a Rakian Brandy."

The countess' attention immediately returned, she was bemused by the inappropriate behaviour of this particular Sith Lord but also insulted that he'd command an Imperial officer around like that.

"Freya," there it is again with the name, "what about you? Something non-alcoholic?"

"A Vine-coffee, please."

"I must apologize, I am not the wait staff." Directing this bit at the one who asked.

"And I hope I did not offend, Envoy Lok, your ways are very unknown to most of the galaxy.." He said towards the envoy.

"As for you Lieutenant, you'd be wise to remember your rank here. Even if these two want to have their games you are still expected to maintain your respect and discipline." Kain said, just a bit of an edge to his voice. He then lightened his mood and called a waiter over.

"However, enough of this, shall we order drinks properly now?" He finished, directing this towards all three of the group.*

Falkyria grit her teeth in embarrassment and anger, down casting her gaze she placed the blame for the most part on that ridiculous Sith and partially on herself for going along with that little scheme.

Meanwhile Azrael shared in some of the resentment of the countess for the major but for wildly different reasons. He closed the distance to the major, menacingly hanging over him like a shadow.

"Oh so we're pulling rank now, are we major? You'd best be careful when playing my games, if that is the case. I'm a harsh game master."

Azrael took a step back and remained silent, his masked gaze was fixated on the major. At least, so it seemed. The long, pale mask had a handful of narrow slits that seemed to be more decorative than for sight. It was difficult to tell what exactly Azrael was looking at.

As Lok obtained his drink from one of the waiters he paid close attention to Azrael and Falkyria. She clearly was not expecting that either and from the looks of it she didn't quite appreciate that. He wondered if even Azrael was expecting that.

"My, my Azrael, you have indeed taken a liking to this one, my old friend."

Lok chuckled, He turned to Falkyria

"Oh don't worry about him, he may seem, peculiar, but for a Sith he is quite trustworthy. At least, in my experience."

*Kain did not show any reaction to the surprise movement of the sith save for a cocked eyebrow in his direction, not even sure that the sith was paying attention. The way it made the Lieutenant nervous should have made him wary, yet he was not. He knew that the sith was merely playing a game.

At the mention of his title he turned towards the envoy and responded politely. "Yes of course, and it is a pleasure to make yours. I have heard many things about you, some good and some bad. But you have proven a loyal servant to the Enclave and that is to be worthy of respect." Kain replied offering a pleasant smile.

"As for intelligence, I most certainly have to agree." Kain continued, pausing to take a quick sip of his drink. "I consider intelligence true power and if used correctly can push any of ambition to their choice of power." Kain finished, downing the last of his drink as well.*

"Liking? Trustworthy? My dear Lok, it's been so long you've forgotten all about who I am and what I do."

Azrael returned his attention to the topic at hand.

"I think we're all familiar with the old saying; knowledge is power, no need to remind us major. We Sith know very well just how true it is, none of us would be here without diligent study and without leaving several dozen corpses in our wake."

"That is your reality, a Sith reality, it is not necessarily ours. Power is power, some of us are simply born superior while others have to struggle. Ironically, that also applies to you, Sith. You seem to have won the genetic lottery, what with you being able to use the Force and all."

He listened to what they all had to say.

"Well said, Countess, The force can be considered a tool, a powerful one indeed, but what good is a tool if the user is incompetent, if they are incapable of controlling such a tool? We should not forget that the Sith are merely allied with the Empire, not in control of it."

Lok looked at Azrael as he said that last part.

"The future, like the force however, can be very fickle. Who knows what tomorrow may bring."

Deep down Lok wondered if the new dark lord could bring the Sith back to the forefront. He also found himself interested in Azrael's behavior. He was awfully aggressive towards the Major.

*Kain nodded and listened to all that was said, not wanting to say much on the subject of the force. He did however become very interested in what was said about the sith.

"You are correct, Envoy Lok, the sith are not in control of the Empire. And I find that very very comforting." Kain exclaimed, checking everyone's faces for a reaction. "You all either remember or have studied what sith in control of the Empire has done to the galaxy. We have almost been wiped from this galaxy more times than I can count due to the sith." Kain continued. "I mean no offense of course, but it is merely a fact that a sith with power over an empire spells disaster for the galaxy." He finally finished, not wavering an ounce in his voice even in the face of the two sith.*

If anything was going to set off Azrael it was this man, Falkyria thought. Offence or no, a common Sith stereotype is that they have short tempers and are quick to slice apart those who cross them literally or figuratively. Sometimes they'd even kill for fun. The countess was curious to see if this particular Sith would fall in that stereotype.

"Are you an imbecile or has something struck your head when you were little?"

So much for the major. Azrael sounded shocked, there was a slight tremor to his raised voice and a lingering sense of anger. To the young officer it seemed as though the room shook and darkened slightly, likely some sort of technique employed by this mad mystic. Some others nearby glanced at the spectacle, clearly affected. The Sith seemed to glow red.

"Studied history, remembrance."

Things cooled down, light returned to normal and the glow faded behind the pale mask. Sith were absolutely terrifying, a clear threat and yet allowed to exist. Ridiculous.

"So, you want facts? Fact one; the Sith Emperor Kairn dominated the entire galaxy and won the Imperial Civil War. Fact two; a non-Sith succeeded him and began an era of stagnation that led to the formation of the Federation, the Mandalorian Hegemony and the Nexus Enclave. Fact three; he was succeeded by another non-Sith who sparked a Federation counter-attack that led to a crushing military defeat for the Empire."

His gaze fell on the little countess. It was a piercing nerve-wracking stare the girl couldn't break from. The moment seemed to drag on and on, she began to expect a crimson spark to slice her apart despite her doing no wrong.

"Lieutenant," she jolted "please, share your view with us. I'm curious to see what an unbiased, neutral opinion sounds like."

That was the single most extremely unnerving experience of her entire life. As far as unbiased and neutral opinions go hers would be the farthest from it after the Judicator and after today.

"The ideology of the Emperor is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is results."

Azrael made an understanding sound before rolling his vision back to the major as painfully tense and irritatingly dramatic as possible for a humanoid.

"Is there anything I missed or should I go to fact four?"

Reply Good karma+1 vote
lord_of_pain Creator
lord_of_pain

Lok watched Azrael's reaction with great interest. He really took that badly, but that was to be expected. His smirk disappeared.

"The simple fact is, the Sith have proven that they are only ever capable of galactic domination when a dark lord powerful enough to keep them loyal is present, and there hasn't been one since Kairn, and I don't know if we will ever see one as powerful as him again. Without one, the Sith resort to the infighting so prevalent in their culture."

"In the end that is the one thing it boils down to. Power. If you want the Sith to be the galactic power they have the potential to be, then you need the power to control and direct them. Do you know any who are capable of this? Perhaps you, my old brother?"

*Kain knew exactly the type of response he was going to receive and he merely grinned. An evil grin of a man getting exactly what he wanted. Even as the room grew dark due to the growing anger of the sith he still simply grinned.

"You know, Sith, you shouldn't flare and flaunt your power here. You may find some to be a tad hostile to the usage of the force." Kain stated, staring directly at his face.

"As for your "facts", we can agree to disagree." Kain said with a small wink.*

This man was an idiot and a danger to the Empire with his dangerous, narrow-minded and short-sighted views. Disagreeing with facts is infantile and impossible, at the rank of major this Kain would pose an issue to the efficiency of the Empire. These thoughts were shared by both the countess and the Sith Lord.

*Kain continued to hold his gave even as the sith turned to leave, but held his tongue. He feared he might have gone too far, but if the sith would strike him down it would merely prove his point. Sith are monsters, and should never hold power again. They hold no restraint and are merely instruments of death, tools of war. Nothing more.

"I apologize, Countess, if ive upset your friend. And do not make mistake me for a fool, even if I have signed my own death warrant." Kain said, taking a sip of wine. Quite good too he thought.

"If he strikes me down he will only prove my point, they are nothing but tools of death and war. Something to be used to great effect, but should never be trusted with power. They kill and plot at will, regardless of their past successes they should never be allowed power again." Kain continued.

"I hope that you will learn this, Countess. It is clear you wish to rise up within the Empire, but be wary of the sith. And maybe you and I will cross paths again, because you and I both want the same thing. The Empire will rise again, and if I die before then so be it." Kain exclaimed, going off without realizing he might of gone too far. Looking around and seeing no suspicious eyes looking his way, he lowered his voice.

"If you do rise within the military, and I survive this day you should follow my moves and dealings. For soon I hope to get the whole or at least the majority of the drive yards at my back. And with that economic and political reach one could take himself very far, if that was what he wished. But I am not one for thrones and great power, I merely wish to see someone else lead us to greatness once more." Kain finished, a passion in his voice.

"Good evening, Countess, perhaps you could calm your sith friend down. And if I survive and you ever need a friend, I will be glad to oblige.." He exclaimed turning around and joining his new friends from the drive yards..*
