Still can't attach news articles to Source. Someone needs to change its permissions.
(BTW, the PC to cross-platform one is fascinating!)
Absolutely fascinating. I'm going there next year to try to snag me a job!
The porting document shows well why many PC ( AAA titles ) suck nowadays: because they are dumbed down to the restriction level of consoles. The result? Crappy games with crappy controls and that feel like a console game ported to a PC. They should have more said why NOT to do this than how to do it :D
I take it you haven't played any of the Orange Box games.
I take it you don't know me. I do have played them and I do have play many other games which had (1) no console in mind or (2) cross-developed with a console in mind. Guess what the result is. Games from (1) are throughout better... for the computer player. Games from (2) all had the same problems which turned them into a nightmare for a PC gamer: bad UI, dumbed down controls ( often stripping IMPORTANT gameplay mechanics for the sake of consoles ) and often bad saving support.
What goes for Source ( stop call it orange, it's still the Source Engine with modifications after all ) it started out as a PC game and "then" ventured to consoles. This is why they have not yet met the same fate as all the other games from (2).
The presentation is about games that started on PC, like the Orange Box. (I say Orange Box because that product is the subject and context of the presentation, not specifically Source.)
Of course there are examples of what you're talking about, plenty of them, but you're exaggerating that fact into an enormous generalisation.
