A place where ModDB members can debate civilly, and learn from each other's views.
Would you consider modding volunteer work? Since my school is making me do volunteer work in order to graduate and well I need the best arguments possible so that I can do something I enjoy and not just some lame work at the local park, organization, or elderly house.
Clearly I think modding is volunteer work but I just need to convince people that generally think video games cause violence. Also I was meaning to post this for some time but I kept being short on time so I only now got around to posting this.
I think they qualify the volunteer work by saying that it has to benefit your local community, which would mean modding wouldn't count.
Sad, but you are precisely correct mate.
They'd probably never allow modding as that. Unless maybe you hooked up some kids from an orphanage with computers and modded games for them. lol
But what if my local community can also download and play the mod?
It's entertaining but it wouldn't really "benefit" the community in a significant way. (At least not in the way they want it to).
I know that in the past I worked at a historical park supervising children playing. That's entertainment and since that counts (hard to argue against that even without logic) then modding should.
Perhaps... but you can't argue being in front of a computer vs. being outside to someone from that generation.
I'm just being realistic with ya.
Which is why I asked for good arguments:D
Let's see... you put your effort into a work, you don't get paid for the work, and other people can enjoy the product from your work... yes, it should counts as volunteer work.
But good luck convincing the last generation about that, heck, most of them don't even consider game designer as a real job in the first place simply because they are doing something "fun".
... and of course dealing with the paper work would be a pain in the @SS (how to count hours, documentation, etc.)
------
Realistically though, it's a lost cause, I would advice you to find more "traditional" volunteer work.
Good point, its just that I hate wasting my time and that is exactly what their version of volunteering is. A waste of time. As for documentation, there's always something like FRAPS:D They can look through the 5 hours of video if they want to and I got at least 2TB of empty storage so it should be enough:P
Just do some work for a neighbor, or if you're really in a tight spot, a relative (preferably with a different last name). While people might enjoy your mod, I doubt your community will appreciate it as much as helping them out around town.
Mandatory volunteer work is silly- it isn't volunteering, it's just mandatory WORK. Nobody's volunteering for a damn thing. I have no idea why they dress it up the way they do...
It's to stroke the little penises of the politically correct 'professional' parents so that they feel good about themselves by promoting their children's 'achievements' for their own sake.
