I found this game called Gnomoria that you can now find here on Desura. its like a 3D reincarnation of dwarf fortress. a lot less intimidating!

I saw that like two days ago... I'm thinking of giving it a shot, although I think we ALL know how much less in-depth it will be ;)

To be fair, it's not trying to be.

I'm all in favour of expanding the Dig Deeper, Greedier genre. Gnomoria looks like a positive step.

Really? You don't think so? I'm not saying it's an absolute replica, but I definitely think it IS kind of trying to be. I've played it and found it extremely similar. However, it is not without its merits! For one thing, it's more accessible to a more general playership. Another thing is that it looks good (and we all know DF will never win any graphics contests). Thirdly, it will give DF more exposure and perhaps be the first rung on the ladder to playing it.

It's without question inspired by DF; I don't think anyone would be silly enough to deny that. But it seems to have its own way about things, and it's probably going to steer a little clear from the depth that DF offers in exchange for accessibility.

Once in a while, a game similar to DF that isn't quite as deep can be quite a relief.

It'll be a long, long time before a game could begin to approach the depth of DF, but not every game really needs to be.

Alright, so for those of you who are interested, there is a download that is NOT Lazy Newb which still includes a tileset and some goodies--it's straight off of Mike "Mayday" Green's website. For those of you who may have heard of the name, yes, it is the one and only Mayday who made the Mayday tileset. This is also the set included with the download; I use it myself and would highly recommend it. The download has the most current version of DF (0.34.07), but lacks programs you might enjoy (e.g., Soundsense, Stonesense, Dwarf Therapist). Anything you want other than the added embark profiles, tileset, and worldgen can be downloaded separately should you feel so inclined.

Here's a link; hope it helps get you going! Mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl
