Well, technically the LHC never was designed to make money. And whether or not they discover the Higgs boson this year, it won't be a waste as you might think. Either it will find the Higgs boson and thus confirm the standard model or they will not find it, which would indicate that the standard model is very wrong.
In any case, it has allowed researched on other particle of matter too. One example of this is, they have managed to trap and anti-hydrogen if my memory doesn't fail me, for about 19 mins, which is an achievement in particle physics and engineering. Not good enough for space travel just yet, but someday......
Well they've discovered it now. So money well spent. Though this image still serves no purpose as the particle has nothing to do with proving or disproving the existence of God.
