Not really something I'm planning on attempting, just interested to see the thoughts of experienced modders on this.

Do you think it would be possible to use the SAGE engine (specifically C&C3 or, I guess, Red Alert 3) to make a space-based RTS mod?

The most obvious way, I suppose, would be to make a space texture for the terrain, but... I can't see that actually looking really good. I could be wrong though!

But yeah. Any thoughts, opinions?

Oct 15 2009 Anchor

Well, it depends. What do you mean exactly? ;-) A space-based mod could be possible, if you mean changing water terrains to outer space ones, then making aircraft transformable above/on "water" (i.e. so they can leave the planet orbit, etc.).

Oct 15 2009 Anchor

Ah, I wasn't thinking of planets and such, though that could be interested too. Similar to how Empire Earth worked. I was more thinking really just like how Star Wars: Empire at War or Homeworld does it, completely in space.

BTW, I meant RA3. :-) So in RA3 you could make only water based maps. IDK if replacing water terrains is possible, but you can then have space terrains instead of water ones, then buildings placeable on water, and finally working production facilities/factories (in RA3 there are two working on water w/o problems: shipyard + airpad).

But AFAIK, there isn't anything similar to Submarine Titans engine. = / There you could position submarines on about 5 water levels, so you could hide your units in 5-level high underwater caves, etc or even avoid opponent's torpedos thanks to level maneuvering!
That would be awesome here, b/c you could decide on which space level you want to have units, but it's technically impossible - apart from a workaround with unit transformation ability in RA3.

Ah. Sadly I don't have RA3. Not sure I'll get it. :/ Completely uninterested in the game itself, not sure I can justify the price for mods alone.

Yeah, doesn't really sound like space is a frontier that the RTS version of SAGE will be going any time soon. :P Shame.

Unless someone more creative than us comes up with an idea! :P

I don't know if its relevant since the topic is from Oct but I made this some time ago (nearly 2 years ^^):

Wow, awesome material for short films. Except that Earth... looks... cartoony. ^^

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

The thing what I wanted to show is that is easy to get some space even in TW without some water/ground abusing thing.

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

Yup, I know that. ;-) I just remarked how it could be used... differently... :-)

But have you tested any mechanics, gameplay, etc? Does it really work or it was a small sample of coding/checking?

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

Was more of a small check. Hadn't got the time for doing something bigger... was a test for some mod I had in mind but I reduced it to a Tower Defense map cause of time ^^

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

That means it got scrapped. = / Maybe some day somebody will take it up and make something bigger. :-D

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

*eyegasm*

WOW. That's... Better than what I imagined. I can see so many cool things coming from that. ^____^

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

Too many... ewww, because prob nobody will be inspired by this! What a waste. = /

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

Does that mean I'd have to do the work myself? :|

Dec 10 2009 Anchor

You can always ask Asuka about a few things. ;-) But well... one can always post an ad/announcement about new project on the group main page (news/feature).

Dec 11 2009 Anchor

I meant modding in general! xD I'll take that as a yes...

Hrm... I might give it a try ... Oh. Wait. Crap. I was so excited I forgot my computer can't even run Tiberium Wars right now. *siiiiigh* Well, guess I can write down ideas and maybe make some 3D models in the meantime. Yes, I shall definitely have to ask Asuka some things.

If you're watching this thread, Asuka, first question:

Is it possible to pull the Tiberium Wars camera out further? And, if so, would it actually be more efficient just to make the entire scale of models smaller instead? Come to think, hacking the camera is kind of a stupid fix when I could just make the models smaller. Heh. But you can answer anyway if you like! Unfortunately I have work and will be busy the next few days. Probably won't even get to mess around with modeling for the next few days. *sigh*

Dec 11 2009 Anchor

Ah, such questions can be answered even by other people (I meant something very very specific what can be answered only by him ;-D).
I have seen some scaled out maps myself. IDK if they were maps or mods, but it is 100% possible.

Haha, yeah, I figured after I posted that. I mean not to insult your skills! :P

Thanks for the info. I shall ponder and plot now... ¬¬

My initial thought was bringing the Tiberium Wars to space, but... I don't think I could pull an artistic design that would fit, nor create a plausible background. Something original might be better.

Dec 11 2009 Anchor

Oh no, this doesn't concern skills at all. ;-) One could remember something like that. ^^

Well, if you think you can't, you should make yourself capable or more skilled. ;-) And if you don't have appropriate, zealous friends, you'd better learn everything what's needed yourself, most probably. ;-) People are more likely to join on-going project with a lot of progress of a hint of professionalism in it.

Dec 11 2009 Anchor

Ooh, right, I get it. :P

Well, also, there's the fact that I'm not really sure if I'm interested in bringing the Tiberium Wars to space. It'd be a bit weird. As I'm mainly a story writer, it'd be much more interesting to me to do something original. I was already planning on learning everything that was needed myself, although... Not sure if I'll be recruiting anyway.

We shall see what the future holds.

Wow, though. Tiberium Wars is ~2 years old? Huh... Doesn't feel like it's been that long.

Dec 11 2009 Anchor

Hehe, yup, it's already 2 yo. :-) A baby, one can say, but only for some time, b/c everything (and everybody) ages quite fast. ;-P

O.o
Isn't bringing C&C3 to the space original? Also I'd like to see other planets than Earth-like ones (even if heavily infested with Tib, they're still sooo boring. ;-D Some other planets would be more innovative). :-)

Dec 12 2009 Anchor

Well, yes, it's original, in the sense no one (that I know of) has done it before. But I mean original storyline and everything.

Heh, though ('course, I have no idea whether you could do something like this) it'd be interesting, you could have sort of a two-sided mod, space-based, and then a futuristic land-based one. Yeah, my original idea was that after Earth reached critical Tiberium mass, was no longer habitable, there'd probably be a human fleet searching among the stars for a new home. Sort of Battlestar Galactica-ish. But you could have the space battles, as well as planetary recon. Would be interesting.

Dec 12 2009 Anchor

Well, maybe it could be more similar to Dune, except that "spice", i.e. Tiberium, would be everywhere instead of just on Arrakis?

Dec 15 2009 Anchor

Sorry it took me so long to reply.

More like Dune as in, humanity has already spread to the stars and made colonies and such?

Dec 15 2009 Anchor

Yup. Already conquered some of the planets.
