From the earliest PadMaps came the mod PadWorld, and now from that distinguished provenance comes the next evolution, the World of Padman Standalone. Developed and headed by the professional cartoonist and illustrator ENTE, PadWorld Entertainment proudly present a free multiplayer standalone game for Windows, MacOSX, and Linux that's powered by an extended ioQuake3-Engine.

WoP Editing Install and configure GtkRadiant 1.5

0. Introduction

In this tutorial I would like to show you how to install and configure GtkRadiant 1.5 to make it compatible with World of Padman standalone game. GtkRadiant 1.5 is one of the best level editor programs out concerning id-Tech 3 driven games. Just follow the instructions step by step and start mapping.

1. Downloads and requirements

  • Make sure you have WoP 1.1 Standalone (Windows|Linux), WoP 1.2 Patch (Windows|Linux) and ENTE's PadPack (ZIP) installed.
  • Download GtkRadiant 1.5 (Windows installer) - Vista and Linux users should check qeradiant.com for additional information!
  • Download WoP GtkRadiantPack (ZIP) and WoP MappingPack (ZIP). These files contain necessary and additional World of Padman mapping and game content! Alternatively Windows users can download the WoP Mapping 2in1 Installer (EXE), which contains and installs both packages easily.

2. Installing GtkRadiant 1.5

Start GtkRadiant 1.5 installation routine and after a few clicks select 'Custom' installation, since you won't need all of its components. In the next menu window plenty of installation possibilities are shown, if you enlarge the tree. Deactivate all of the provided 'Game Support' packages, if you want to map for WoP only. If you decide to map for another game later, you can still reactivate and install the appropriate package later of course.

The 'Plugins' listed and the 'GtkRadiant Editor Manual' can always come in handy though, so keep them selected. OK, follow the rest of the instructions and finish the installation, but please do not start GtkRadiant 1.5 before step 3 is completed!

3. Installing WoP mapping packs

Simply unpack the WoP GtkRadiantPack into your GtkRadiant installation directory (e.g. 'C:\Program Files\GtkRadiant 1.5.0') directly. Please pay attention to the sub-directories, three new folders ('games', 'wop.bspc' and 'wop.game') should appear in your GtkRadiant installation directory now.
What next? Unpack the WoP MappingPack into your World of Padman standalone game installation directory (e.g. 'C:\Program Files\World of Padman'). Mainly scripts, map-objects, textures, skyboxes and example maps for different game-modes should be installed correctly now. The straight forward example maps for SyC and BB will substantially facilitate the work load for you later.
Afterwards you should find new sub-directories in your wop-folder inside the WoP installation directory (e.g. 'C:\Program Files\World of Padman\wop') such as \maps, \scripts, \models, \textures and \env. Read-mes of both packages can be found in the \XTRAS folder.

4.Configuring GtkRadiant 1.5

You can start GtkRadiant 1.5 now for the first time. In the 'Global Preferences' window 'World of Padman' should appear now as a supported game. Select it! I recommend to activate 'Enable Logging' and to deactivate 'Show Global Preferences'. If you previously installed several support packages for other games too, leave the last check mark activated, in order to be able to decide on every start, for which game you would like to map.

Global Preferences

Next set the path to your WoP installation (e.g. 'C:\Program Files\World of Padman'). GtkRadiant 1.5 should open normal with default settings. Thus the editor is set for mapping for the World of Padman standalone and you can do the remaining configurations under 'Edit/Preferences...'.

5. Recommendations

If you're working for the first time with the GtkRadiant 1.5, I recommend following settings under 'Edit/Preferences...':

  • Interface/Layout --> the third option with the 3 views
  • Settings/Build --> enable check-mark 'Enable Build Process Monitoring', if you want to compile your map later utilizing the 'Build' menu.
  • Settings/Build --> enable check-mark 'Stop Compilation on Leak'.

A restart of the editor is necessary now. Since some short cuts changed in the new GtkRadiant 1.5.0, here you find a change list.

6. Troubleshooting

GtkRadiant does not start on some systems and reports an error 'assertion failure: module system failed to initialize - see radiant.log for error messages'. To fix this issue please install the latest version of the MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86).A detailed description can be found here.
