Quick tutorial in how to add games to your mame emulator.

Posted by on - Basic Other

Ok, so first you need to download the game, and place it in your Rom folder, located in the Mame folder.
Do not unzip the games... leave them as is.

Then Fire up your mame, and click on "All games" option, which should be located on the left column, to display the list of all games.

Scroll down to find the name of the game you just added.
You can either find the full name, or the short version of it, which should be the name of the zip file.

Right click it, and select "Audit"
After a short scan, mame will tell you if the game has passed the audition or not.
If it has, it's fine and good to go... if not, then either there are files missing from the game, which means it wont play properly or not at all.

Solutions are:
Either get another version of the game, or download a different version of mame.
Not all games work with the same versions of mame.

There is a way to audit all your games at once, but the scan takes a lot longer.
To do this, simply go the "File" in the command menu and select "Audit all games"

Every time I try to add a game, it says "Missing one or more of the required ROM images."

I've tried many different sources.

Hey so, quick question, I downloaded a smash 64 ROM but when I try to run it, it just gives me a list of names that closely match it. The version of MAME32 I got was from the Kaillera download since I want to play online. Basically every time I run the ROM it says "Super Smash Bros. (U) [!] closely matches: and then gives me a bunch of pop ups with close names, but doesn't run anything. I put it in the ROM folder of MAME but it doesn't show up in all games either. Any ideas?

Did you audit it? Secondly, is that game supported on online feature?

My Mame and the zip file for the game I am wanting to play ended up in my downloads folder. Will it still work if I run Mame with the game's zip file in the same folder as Mame itself?

So this means I'll have to copy the MAME exe file to another folder and then put the ROMs in a subfolder.
Sorry for the double post as I forgot I hadn't signed my iPad into the site yet.

You need a main folder called MAME, Which you later have to select as path to all other folders on it, so MAME.exe will know where to find everything.
Inside the main folder, you will have the folders named roms, ini, scores, shots, etc...
Put the games zipped in the roms folder.
You will need to start up MAME and set up the file paths to the folders.

How would one add a Homebrew/Hack Rom into the MAME Database from the HBMAME? Want to get those Roms running on Android, but no matter what Emu I try, they will not work. So unless RetroArch or someone else takes a stab at Developing it for Android, stuck using the PPSSPP Emu with the CPS1PSP, CPS2PSP and MVSPSP Emus :'(

Not all roms work, or require the botleg zip to work. Download both.

I recently got into MAME and have successfully played a few games but I am so confused as to the [bios] and multiple sets.

For example, if I want to play Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, there are 4 sets shown, a cocktail set, and German set. I have all 6 sets in my ROMS folder, but which one do I actually 'play'? Clicking set 1 crashed my emulator on exit, and set 2 turns into speed racer as the game clock goes 1000 miles an hour by the time I reach a new level (after the mine cars). Do I click set 4? And is this the same for games that have like 9 sets? Do I click the 9th one?

Thanks in advance!

After playing around with MAME OS X I can tell by the games list that parent ROMs are necessary to play clones. The parent for Indian Jones is Atarisys1. This has made it that much easier to figure out which ROMs are absolutely necessary and which are minor revisions. At first I was grabbing all ROMs with a given title just in case. Now I grab the parent first and if that is the file I am after, then no need to grab any other files.

Now if I could figure our CHD files? I found a tutorial and actually got Daytona USA to play on MAME OS X, but it was so slow that I deleted it. Is it like this with all CD ROMs for MAME? Or just for MAC?

SETs are the version where the game was released. For example Gamulator.com is the North America Set for the game Final Fight while the game also has Japan(the original set) , EU set and WORLD set( Emuparadise.me(World,_set_1)/12860 ) lastly released.

I play Mame games for a long time and in the begining, I have a problem the Emulator can't find the ROM files. In the end, I find that the names of WinRAR file and the files inside must be the same name or when you extract the files the emulator can't recognize them. Now I'm downloading Rom's from this website Retrostic.com and I don't have that kind of problems anymore.

Great explanation. I have followed the exact same steps as they are in your post with MAME pack downloaded from Rompacks.com and it seems that all is working fine. Thank you so much for explaining the whole process of adding games to MAME. I didn't find any other more detailed explanation via Google.

P.S Those who still have troubles make sure to read this below.

NOTE : I copied this admin's comment from above
