The first environment from Rituals : our alpha build.

Posted by on

Just finished building the first environment from the alpha build we have been working on.
The alpha is structurally similar to Fictions, but we are trying out an intricate and somewhat longer narrative. Shifting from verse, and the attendant outline storytelling method to actual dialogue.

This environment is a composition of four small rooms, interconnected through an enclosed courtyard ( above ) and a few passages.

With the addition of details we reworked the art style a little bit, moving away from the desaturated colors ( at least for a little while ) into a more vibrant pallet. There is also a scaling down of the architectural elements.

Here are some screens from within Sketchup. With the increased amount of detail, and the numerous small objects in the environment, we composed a bulk of the scene inside Sketchup itself.

nice shaders! Did you write them yourself?

We are not using any custom shaders at all ! What you see is the simple Diffuse shader, from Unity indie and the Unlit shader in some specific places.

The visuals are a combination of painted textures, lightmapping, and mesh detail.

Looks cool and interesting, nice art style! (: You should consider putting some more polygons on those tea cups though or Smmoth the Normals (or both) in order to make them look round.

Thank you.

Also the low polygon cups are intentional, we are treading a fine line between low poly art and textured, realistically lit game art - and where we might retain the 'broken' polygonal forms and where we ought to capitulate to refinement is something I constantly struggle with. Will look into changing the cups a little bit see how it feels in game !

Thanks again.
