So, was I like the only person that instantly had their doubts when I saw the trailer? I mean Cloud Imperium Games has hundreds of developers many of which are basically legendary at this point and millions of dollars to work on Star Citizen and yet Star Citizen is nowhere near complete.
So what hope did Hello Games have? Sure they were using procedural generation to make pretty much everything but procedural generation is boring. For one true randomness is very difficult to do as xkcd points out Xkcd.com and it may not even be something that's desirable. Since with randomness you lose creative control and thus may not be able to make the universe look unique enough to provide an interesting experience beyond the first few worlds. Of course No Man's Sky had multiple other problems which may not have been a direct result of Hello Games reliance on procedural generation.
TLDR: Procedural generation isn't as amazing as so many people seem to believe it is.
Since Minecraft, everything needs to have procedural generation and crafting. Some devs put them even where they don't fit. Minecraft sold a lot. Gotta appeal to that audience, because that's where the money is!
That's the problem of making games for profit instead of wanting to create a great game...
Houston, we have a problem, this game is so ****
I've said it once, and I'll say it again: I'm so glad I've become hype-proof.
It looked awesome from the trailer, but I still didn't fall for the hype, which means I didn't end up disappointed by it, like so many people did.
