I have an idea.
Why don't we find all the countries that are the best in a particular area - Finland at teaching, Portugal at lessening drug addiction, Iceland at financial recovery - and try to copy what they did to get those good markings. In Australia we get pretty good marks in country-wide and world-wide tests, but we aren't really happy about school. I want to know what Finland gets so right and how it can make me enjoy school.

Umm Iceland's Economy recovered? Wut? Switzerland is Just fine, so is Norway..At least in a much better shape then you guys.
Oh and Portugal before before you worry about America maybe you should worry about your Debt and Unemployment.
It's the Socialist and Liberal beliefs including welfare and run away illegal Immigration Ruining America and Europe BTW.

Norway and Switzerland didnt have any finance crisis to begin with so you can't compare Iceland to them. And what does Portugals economy have to do with this?
I wonder why the didn't have one to begin with?
And Portugal's economy is just an example that they have no room to talk about other countries when they have far more issues then the US or most of Europe.
because unlike Iceland and Portugal, They either have oil or store everyones money.
COme on, the pics purpose is to show how portugal made a big step in dealing with drug addiction, not how they're superior to everyone.

Also the Netherlands has Oil and the Germans have Big banks that store "everyone's" Money...
America..and several other countries also have Oil and other resources.
Norway and Switzerland do a little more then just have dumb luck, it's how they run their Government.
Also your right the picture is not to show how these countries are Superior to everybody, Just how they are "superior" to America. I'm just stating the facts how they have no room to talk bad about another country when their own house and cards are not in order.

Iceland did indeed recover. They killed the banks.
Their currency is still worthless, they still have food shortages, people are leaving the country and everything is VERY expensive. That is not recovery.
On the side note they are trying to re-invent themselves to lure investors back and are taking a few steps to fix their issues. but their inflation alone last year was still 4.9 percent.
Keep in mind that you say they killed the banks but the banking crisis was caused by the Prime minster and other government figures ((many were charged) at the time and the Icelandic Central Bank which allowed Fraud, subprime lending, and Mass bonds to be issued.
So the government was just as responsible as the banks were.
socialism, welfare and "liberal beliefs" are ruining Europe? can you tell me more about these "liberal beliefs" that are apparently the source of all that is evil? and while you're at it, look at the overall quality of living in Scandinavia and tell me socialism and welfare totally ruin countries. i sure as heck don't mind all these free healthcare services and school meals!
oh and the promised land of fat cat plutocracy that we know as the United States of America is being 'ruined' by wide-spread corruption and serving the corporations and their money instead of the people. big surprise, these are the complete opposites of socialism. which brings us to the nucleus of it all: let's abandon the fatalist beliefs of "left vs right, socialist vs capitalist" and all that bullshiet and create a fusion. going too far in one direction will eventually *** the people of a country - or the world - over (true both in economics and ideologies). we need a functional marketing economy with competition and innovation, because so far that has proven to be the best system for large-scale things, but we also need socialism to take care of the people
Wow just wow..Just so you know I am married to a Swede, I currently live in Sweden, and I know what it is like to live in Sweden. How is the Employment rate? Norway is alright. But what about Sweden? Denmark? Finland? How easy is it to find a job there?
Why the hell should me or any other hard working person share with dead Beat Illegals and Welfare lovers that don't do a damn thing in life?
Why the hell should I be taxed a different percentage in taxes then somebody else? Why should I be punished for being successful?
I notice you said you enjoy "free" health care. Well news to you it isn't Free! Someone pays for it, and in some countries a Bureaucrat not a doctor decides peoples fate and right to live when they need medication or surgery.
Corporations are ruining the USA and other parts of the world? Ok let me ask this..when has a Welfare sponge Created a Job? Go to a Grocery store Lately? Buy an iPhone ? How about that PC you likely are surfing the net with?
Do you know how socialism works? It steals from the Middle class and wealthy and gives to the "less fortunate" it only works until you run out of other people's money. Then what? How will your "Free" healthcare and "free" school lunches work out?
On to the last part of your second paragraph.
I couldn't agree more. It's just that people go to far one way or the other. Pure socialism will never work, pure Capitalism will never work. But socialism as of now does not allow Free markets to florish, but corporations have to avoid becoming Crooked as well ((looking at you Lockheed Martin)).
Someone please post the image on one of the debating groups so we can have actual discussions/debates.

America is ruled by Money and Businesse. As soon as Reagen's administration helped make corporations like a single person instead of you know, a business, this country has been a bomb getting ready to blow.
Anyone wanting to blame Obama for all our troubles, forgets that Bush had 8 years to be president and at the end of the 8 years the country was worse off than how he started.
At the end of Obamas administration, the country will be better off than what he started (from recession to growth, rather than from growth to recession like GWB)
