What's really saddening is how people believe just because a faction does something they don't personally approve of they're automatically irredeemable and lose their cause to be involved in a fight. Protagonists have struggles and make mistakes. It's part of their development in the story.
It's just a shame that the culture fought to be preserved ended up a joke decades later. But hey, who am I to comment? The final chapter isn't written yet. And Ive still got many years left to witness the plot thicken.
