Oda Nobunaga burned down Buddhist temple complex including everyone inside it. 1580, Honganji Temple of Osaka. He was both hated and feared by whole country for that. Guess that someone took inspiration from that.

He gassed the opposing monks with the smoke that rose from him setting fire to their temple, very meticulously, and from every side at the same time. There was no escape.

Nobunaga called himself the Devil Dragon, and made that name his own with his unbound cruelty.
