Grandpa's not lying, that's a P-47*, they were mostly in the European Theater...
*if you look at the wings closely, you can see that there's 4 machines guns on each wing (for a total of 8, which only the P-47 has), you probably mistaken it for the F6F Hellcat, which is slightly different as well as somewhat smaller.
Oh yea, I forgot to mention it appears to be one of the earlier variant of the P-47, hence the lack of bubble canopy. Hence why it really looks like carrier fighters like the Wildcat/Hellcat.
