Nah, most thieves would just wipe the hard drive and sell off the laptop at the nearest pawn shop... because they're too dumb to crack the password to log in.
Thus the first thing I'd do before taking a portable computer outside home would be setting up a BIOS password. And likely also rigging the thing to explode/self-destruct if not opened in a very specific way. Try selling THAT on a pawn shop :paranoia:

Well... one can always sell it as scrap parts to some recycling sweatshop in China/India/some third world country...
even better when you turn your laptop into the shop to fix a virus and the intern decides to upload all those embarrassing photos of you.
Which is why you fix it by yourself...
