seriously, theres barely any good Horror-Mods, and there should be. this, in short, is a group for all the gamers who feel left out of the mod-playing communities just because its hard to make or find something scary. If you think there should be more horror mods out there, or just Love horror mods, feel free to join :D

Mod Status Update

Our team has been optimizing and finalizing the last parts of the mod. We have made a decision to cut the mod in half since it was growing out of control. This has allowed much greater memory management and has allowed for us to progress at a much quicker pace. People shouldn't worry, as this won't effect story or flow since it is designed to have a mid-point that functions similar to an ending.

Also we have been making others play it as well as ourselves. This has allowed us to hammer out any bugs in the early section and to tweak the difficulty on enemies and puzzles. The changes made have been positive and are reflected throughout the whole project.

The Necronomicon

The
Necronomicon is a fictional grimoire appearing in the stories by horror writer HP Lovecraft and his followers.
Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them.

In Cthulhu Island, the Necronomicon plays a large role in progressing and solving puzzles. Depending on where the player is in the level the book will do different things. One example might be having the book summon a creature which tears open the path or something along those lines.

The picture below illustrates how the when the player carries the book it lights up to help the see the surroundings. When the player enters a zone where the Necronomicon can trigger an event it glows a separate color. To activate it, the player open the book and reads a line from the passages contained inside.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but every Lovecraft source I've seen is very clear on the topic of the Necronomicon: Reading it drives you insane. Hell, just being near it isn't very healthy.

I worry if turning it into a prominent game mechanic will undercut its inherent menace.

I understand your feelings and I am going to try to explain without giving away too much. The Necronomicon definitely drives the player insane when he uses it. The effects of the insanity help you progress further into the island. There is also a deeper meaning behind why the book doesn't drive you completely mad yet acts as a tool on your journey into madness. That is all I can say right now, because madness and the reasoning behind it is key to our story.
