There is no need to edit it. You can create another one and using the same text/code format. Write only the additional lines you need. And then put the new file in your mod.
When the game loads, it will read both your desc.lng file and original desc.lng file.
So if you added or rewrited a line it will read from your file (the most up-to-dated), if you missed a line (because it wasn't necessary to edit it) the programm will read from the original file.

U have to set the file names correctly. Like soldier names. Arrange them is a correct way.
