Creating stories through details, interactions and dialogue.

Posted by on

We have often struggled with creating spaces that characters can live inside of. Perhaps because we have often struggled with the creation of the charcters themselves. Nonetheless, we are now shifting focus to smaller non architectural elements. Here are some screens from the new environment we are working on.

Most of the switches, the radio, the papers or books lying around lead to peculier interactions. And the odd volumetric potraits can engage the player in a dialogue. With the addition of details it becomes intresting trying to balance the surreal and static quality of the environment with crowded visuals.

from the diary of Subedar general Connington
Kayamgadh June 1927

There is a squalor here.

A decadence of the multitudes who have come to live within Kayamgadh. It is a deliberate dilapidation. a purposeful defacement of the town.

But If one were to stroll through the street at night, this squalor would invariably recreate memories of a most intimate and trivial kind.

A careless wrapper thrown askance on the edge of the gutter, would remind you of a day when you flung a wrapping of similar sort, into this very gutter. The flaking damp of a municipal wall would remind you of lewd pictures you carved, and it would not surprise you to find those very pictures but, a little further down upon that very wall.

You would begin to see significance in each aberration of the environment. You would remember from these aberrations an event distinct from others in your memory, but of no special consequence.

This would happen often and with such regularity, as to impose upon you the thought that perhaps . . perhaps, these memories are your very own. And that you did throw that wrapper, or deface a wall, similar to the one you now find yourself examining.

But you did not do any of these things that you remember so vividly.

For did you not arrive at Kayamgadh only a day ago ? and surely you are not the kind of person to despoil a public premise. And did you not perhaps see someone else throw that wrapper ? even as you entered the town square, did you not see me discard amongst many things that wrapper, which now lies at the edge of a gutter ?

Or was that me, looking at you ? as I entered the town of Kayamgadh, and walked a stranger on it’s streets, examining the wrapping just discarded, remembering a time when I too discarded one such wrapper.

Compared to our previous environments, we are scaling back on the number of lights we use. This is smaller space, and in trying to create sharp contrasts, we are using very few spotlights isolating bits of the environment in conical penumbras.
