Transhumanism is the idea that human beings can control their own evolution through technology with the use of implants, artificial limbs and similar things.
In this modern day and age, technology is becoming more and more important to us, would it be plausible that we can control our own evolution with the use of technology? And if it is, would it be the right thing to do?
I'm all for the development of bionic replacement parts such as arms and legs. For example; grafting a bionic arm to replace one that was blown off by an IED. However, I wouldn't recommend removing correctly functioning biological body parts in favour of mechanical parts.
Basically, fix people; don't substitute their parts when there is no issue or necessity. Just my two pence.
Spudman basically summed up my feelings, although I'd add that we limit the bionic limbs/organs/etc so that they don't provide any additional advantages over biological ones.
Otherwise we'll end up with this: Youtube.com
I concur.
It comes down to technological development and individual choice. People will want it, people will have developed it, and it may well come to the point where it's as common as being vaccinated to prevent some form of illness.
To what end, who knows and I don't care. As long as everyone doesn't turn into cannibal cyborgs who would I be to stem humanity's technology growth.
Why not? It is advance. And it's not only about limbs (even if you think about that at first), imagine you could access data networks directly, without using phone, or tablet. For gamers - imagine that games could feel real.
...and also imagine what would such thing as directly connect human brain do with todays firewalls and password systems.
I imagine it won't be too long before microchips and the like will start being implanted into people. Probably will be used to track where folks go, scan them like a credit card, and of course gather data so that more effective spam mail can be sent to them.
As for direct connections from one's brain to technology... no. Just no. I'm very happy being alone in my own mind. Besides, I don't want to get a Trojan, :P
You're just walking along when suddenly BANG. You look at the wrong QR code. Your view is being blocked by adverts for porn, ***** enlargement and cactus growth classes. You avert your gaze, only to realise that you've accidentally downloaded a Trojan. Suddenly, and not of your own volition, you begin to spout out addresses, credit card details and throwing the contents of your wallet out to passers by.
That would suck.
Guys, when I wrote direct, I meant direct communication. No browser. Your brain will choose which data packet you want, not receive advertisements. And about trojan, well, how can you hack a brain?
'Twas a joke my dear friend,
Meant to lighten the mood,
To ensure a debate with no end,
And provide us all some brain food
I am looking forward to cyborg cervi.
or maybe i already am...
on a serious note, I am looking forward to it. Human biology is frail and not very efficient. we could drastically increase human potential which i am all for.
plus who wouldnt want to be able to directly upload and download online information?
I'm also looking forward to it, but it shouldn't be forced onto people.
If someone wants to replace their limbs or organs with the cybernetic ones, that's fine, if someone doesn't want that, it's also fine.
There are countless possibilities you can have by replacing just a single body part, let alone most of them.
Cervi and Sanguinius have summarized my stance on transhumanism, bring forth the next stage of human evolution!
