In Obama's speech at the State of the Union, he said that he's going to raise the minimum wage and get tougher on the upper class to benefit the "middle class." Do you think he really is sincere about this, or is he just maintaining his reputation through shallow promises?
Shallow promise. I doubt he could do much even if he wanted to...
He seems to be using his political weight for once, not that it's much. Maybe he'll actually do something and maybe it wont be filibustered into oblivion by the bought Democrats and Republicans, along with the insane teabaggers.
If anything, at least he's going to start utilizing more executive orders thanks to congress having zero credibility.
I think he'll raise the minimum wage by one dollar and then corporations will act outraged and protest by increasing their hamburger prices by a dollar, which will actually give them more profit while they say it's ruining business.
Barack Obama is going to be doing everything in his power to work around congress rather than through it.
Honestly, as bad as I think it is, I don't blame him. We're so factionalized now that our system of checks and balances has devolved into a system of vetos and filibusters. In order to bring any kind of change, the president has to start concentrating his powers.
Look, it's f*cked up, and my faith in government is at an all time low, but we have to understand that the American voters brought this on ourselves. Congressmen get re-elected because moderates only vote for their president (most people don't even KNOW we have mid-term elections)
If this continues, things will certainly be better in the short term, but in the long term, our government will centralize power more and more until we become fascists who vote as nothing more than a formality. There's a chance that it can still be reversed, but it's starting to look unlikely.
