Report article RSS Feed FileFront closes its doors

With the current economical situation another web host closes down.

Posted by Henley on Mar 25th, 2009

It's always a sad thing when big gaming related websites and products go down, first EGM and now FileFront. Given that ModDB currently uses FileFront as an external mirror its safe to say this hits everyone quite hard, especially modders. FileFront will be closed down in a few days if any of you have any files you have hosted there maybe its best if you re-download them just so you will still have a copy.

FileFront_Management wrote:We regret to inform you that due to the current economic conditions we are forced to indefinitely suspend the FileFront site operations on March 30, 2009. If you have uploaded files, images or posted blogs, or if you would like to download some of your favourite files, please take this opportunity to download them before March 30th when the site will be suspended. We would like to give a warm thank you to all of you who have been part of the FileFront communities we have built together. Your support has had a meaningful impact for all of us here at FileFront. Again, we want to give you a sincere “thank you” for your support over the years and wish you all the very best.

The ModDB staff also would like to thank the FileFront team for the support they have offered over the years and wish the best of luck to everyone effected.

Another useful website down, as for similar websites, gamershell has always been fast for me, get 1.5mb/s off it most the time, never usually got that much from Filefront tho, and no login :)

ModDB is in the process of provisioning new fileservers over the coming weeks to help cater for the loss of file serving bandwidth.

Keep an eye on the ModDB Official Blog for more soon.

Whoa, that's a bit of a shock. This is not going to be good for all those files hosted on Filefront, I know I've visited the site a lot to download some handy files.

Where else is there to host?

Mediafire is good but has a 100MB limit for the free account. I've used Microsoft's Skydrive a bit and that's not too bad!

Well, all I have is one question. Will Filefront redeploy once the economy gets back on track? Too many have called it quits. I rather see, "taking a break." Anyways, here's hoping the best.

I signed in to comment on this, and god, i'm horrified. I loved filefront it offered so much for so little, absolutely nothing, and now it makes sense why they closed down. They just couldn't offer such great speeds as they were, and making their financial ends meet. I mourn the passing of Filefront, because back when I was broke it was the best option to Fileplanet.

It is sad to see this host go, but I would like to offer my host as an alternative download site. If anyone is willing to download entire sites contents such as Elite Force Files, Armada Files, SFC Files, Legacy Files and Bridge Commander Files, or any other website hosted by this service, I will work closely with those wanted to save these files and making them available to download on alternative sites piggy backed off the Modsite Network site. Contact me privately here on modDB so I can arrange an FTP account for uploading to my host. I have 400Gig of server space and over 7Tb of download bandwidth available. Thanks...

Oh shoot that's right too, all those site communities are going to bite the dust too.. that is really bad :( those communities have so many files.

I hope we get everything. I just wish they could make a master backup for us and let us grab copies of our data via snail mail :(

It's a shame, if the developers, or the publishers supported the site, maybe they wont need to close. It's a lots of mods there, i bet some of the people bought a game, cause the good mods that can be found there, personally i bought my Orange Box not for the Tf2 nor the Portal, but for the awesome mods. And Filefront is THE BEST SITE to find good mods. And btw a lot of the mods from the Moddb can be downloaded via filefront.
The worst news since 1920.

omg **** my life. Filefront gave me 700kb-2mb download speeds almost everytime. Granted I am only one state away that is not suprising, but still. I ******* hate registering to download or even worse, all that "BECOME A PREMIUM MEMBER OR WE WILL CAP YOUR DOWNLOAD AT 2KBS PER SEC LOL." I hope everyone who is responsible for this dies a horrible death.

It is a real shame to see things go this way for Filefront. Over the years, they have offered those of us with creative talents and opportunity to share our maps, mods and updates with others. In loss, I think we all understand that bit more just how useful Filefront was.

WHAT?! Filefront was absolutely my favorite file hosting place, whenever I see it in a list of mirrors, I always pick it first... no waiting or anything stupid, 1 gig per upload... I just sent something to a friend over the weekend! Screw the banks, FILEFRONT needs to be given an economic bailout. :[
