Why Should I Play Vietnam Glory Obscured? Find out in the mini review!
Posted by Henley on Sep 1st, 2009
Vietnam: Glory Obscured was released and was one of the more hotly anticipated mods for the Generals engine. Since then it has been updated with various fixes and updates, creating a balanced and fun RTS based on the Vietnam war. The idea of the mod itself would in have been difficult, making a mod both challenging enough for advanced players but easy enough for newbie's with a twist of historical accuracy too boot and the whole premise becomes quite intriguing.
The premise of the game is pretty much the same as every other RTS out there, close with and destroy the enemy. Simple stuff really, however what separates V:GO from other RTS games and mods, is the way that this is achieved. You have a host of units from he Vietnam era, well modelled, and detailed. You have base structures to help you with unit training and resource gathering, and defensive structures to keep your harbour safe. Resources are collect via the standard Chinook gathering boxes way of C&C: Generals, but added onto this, is the hearts and minds elements. This is pretty ingenious in my opinion, and one of the first times someone has thought of using civilians in this way. Capturing towns and whorehouses for money is simple, fun, and different. However, this can make running your base and numerous whorehouses difficult, especially against a decent MP foe, I even struggled against Easy AI, but perseverance prevails.
V:GO Outshines itself in a sense that that the game is one of a kind. It is one of the only Vietnam war based RTS mods out there, and even so, it holds its own with other mods of the same genre, set in more popular conflicts. The team is plugging hard away to release more content, and I can only hope we see a fully completed mod on the horizon.
