A few months ago David and I were interviewed by Richard Moss who was writing a piece for the new gaming website Polygon. The article is now posted and provides incredible insight into our 10+ year history of making gaming sites which includes ModDB, IndieDB, IndieDB, Desura and IndieRoyale. It was quite a shock to read the article at first because Richard was so easy to talk and laugh with - I must admit I didn't expect half of the stuff we discussed to be in it. But for the most part it all is, so it is an incredibly honest and detailed history of all the things we've done, decisions we've made and challenges we've faced over the past 10+ years trying to carve out a niche in the gaming community that we so love.
The article is entited DesuraNET's quest to make a better indie community and I encourage everyone to read it (it is quite a long read). Some of the key headlines included in the article are:
- The road to ModDB
- Success breeds more success
- Know your audience
- A place for indies
- An uncertain future
Thanks again Richard and Polygon for the opportunity to be featured on your site, it is a great honor.
Was a nice read. Proud to say that I've been with this community for that decade. Thanks to Scott and the rest of the team!
I've only been around here for half of the journey (v3 alum!), but it has been no less enjoyable. Congrats to Scott and the team for revolutionizing the industry of game distribution and marketing, and empowering the underdogs of development in the process. You have a lot to be thankful for!
Brilliant Article. I keep pointing out that this is really an Australian success story to other people in our local industry. Kinda shocked at how many don't know about you guys at Desura.
(I'm Richard Moss, the guy who wrote the article.)
That's an interesting point, and I'm not sure exactly why most locals don't know that Desura's an Australian operation. But my guess is that, like I did, people just assume it's American, and never bother to find out.
When I saw Scott at the Game Masters Forum in Melbourne earlier this year, I went, 'Oh, crap—the Desura guys are locals? I should find out their story.' Nobody had done a proper profile before, as far as I could see, so I pitched them on this idea. Hopefully my story will open some eyes to the great work Scott, Dave, and the rest of the team have done here.
I always just thought this was an international thing ^^
Very interesting read :)
I've been here for 3 years, but it feels like 10. I love moddb more then any other site, that's for sure! :)
Me too.
I've around here for about 3 years now.
Trust me, best 3 years of my life. Congrats MOdDB!
Interesting read and i like this community and i have plans here :)
I like ModDB much more than Facebook ;)
It's hard to picture a thriving modding scene without ModDB. Good article, ModDB has been my homepage since 2004 and long may it remain that way.
Good job, INtense, Henley and co. on giving a creative community such a great resource.
thanks everyone for the kind words - means a lot!
It's crazy to think how long you guys have been around, only a short time of which I've been here. All the work and effort you guys make is sincerely appreciated!
I always loved the way you connected to your community! You guys are the reason why I started modding and developing and in the end ended up signing up for computer science classes!
Been here since 5 years now (used to had another account too)! ModDB/IndieDB just rocks :)
I've been here for at least 4 years! I decided to create an account because I was browsing ModDB a lot. Thanks to ModDB I discovered a bunch of great mods and indie games, and I not going anywhere! xD
Lovely article, its nice to know a little bit more about the history of this great site!
