Over the next month, ModDB is adding a feast of new servers to our existing network to improve your experience when visiting the site. These include

  • 2 new European File mirrors for members & guests.
  • A new US-based mirror for members & guests.
  • 2 new webservers for faster browsing on the site.

The implementation of the above new servers has begun, so please bare with us over the next couple of weeks as they go live. As the new mirrors are active, we will update this blog.

Report abuse HD videos and audio visualization

Videos took the web by storm a few years back, it was logical evolution for static websites. The next step was HD support which was recently rolled out by Youtube and a number of the big video sites. ModDB has just jumped on the bandwagon and begun rolling out a new video player thanks to GiantRealm (who host it). Whilst there are still a few bugs (i.e. HD only appears to work on the videos original page and not when it is embedded like below) and only 900 of our 4000+ videos are converted - it is a huge leap in terms of visual quality, speed and bandwidth (areas we have struggled to manage in the past). Watch a new video below to see the SD/HD options (note. SD/HD will only show up if the original video you upload is high quality enough):

You can expect all videos to be automatically ported onto this new player over the next few weeks. For the audiophiles don't worry we have an update for you also. We have cranked up audio quality and also added a real visualization effect while you listen to music / podcasts uploaded to ModDB. Listen to the Tin Soldiers track from the Neotokyo CD by Ed Harrison to see just how cool this is:

That is all for now. As always if you see any bugs, have suggestions (or complaints) please leave a comment below.

Report abuse Download mirrors tweaked

Thanks for your patience - We have now completed maintenance on our EU fileserver. We are hoping that the changes made will make a dramatic difference to download speeds for our European members and guests.

Please let us know your feedback on speeds you get when downloading from "eu10.dl.moddb.com".

Thanks!

Report abuse Update on slow download speeds

It looks like our EU server provider has changed their upstreams and for some reason we are no longer getting the 1Gbps out of our EU mirror we were previously.

We are investigating this - and for a short period of time your downloads may be re-routed via our US mirror, and or Filefront.

Once we have resolved the speed issues, we will update the blog right here to let you know.

Report abuse Smart download system deployed

For years now the Mod DB download system has allowed you to blindly choose any mirror. The problem with this was during the quiet periods the system was under utilized and during the busy periods it was over utilized. Not any more! The new system automatically picks the mirror closest to you and sends you your download (and displays an ad yay!) for you to watch while you wait for your file.

This means less clicks, no queues and hopefully not overloading or underloading our servers. Also ISPS CONTACT US if you would like to provide a mirror and have a big ad shown every download. Our system is fully automated, can target IP ranges and will promote your brand while helping our community and site a great deal. We need mirrors because if our systems are overloaded we send people to filefront for their files which we want to avoid, as we want to get the mod files out as quick as possible.
