Huge update to Mod DB - all urls are now "smart" with no ids. Read on for details.

The latest update to to ModDB removes the ID numbers in all the urls, resulting in somewhat cleaner and less lengthy links. "But what happens to all my old links I've posted across all the forums I troll to promote my mod?", you may ask. Don't fret, a script has been put in place to redirect any old links to the new standard. Providing everything goes as planned there should be no hiccups, cross your fingers people.
That is all, please resume your normally scheduled programming and let us know if you encounter any bugs.

Yes! No more 8785 for me!
yay! no retrolling
the main benefit is you can sorta guess urls now, like moddb.com/mods/counter-strike takes you to Moddb.com counter-strike see!
Has there anything else changed? Maybe the way you add images to your news posts (images from your 'images' tab)?
yay for SEO
It is SEO mainly, and ease of use. shorter urls and you dont have to remember a number only a name
Cool. This could be useful.
Very handy!
Nice job :D
Sounds like a nice addition. Although I could imagine the database is not that much in favor of string-key queries instead of int-key queries ;)
yay for mod_rewrite
mod_rewrite is used, but technically it is only doing half of the work. oh and dragonlord every page now has one extra sql query to lookup the name. not too bad considering the improvement it brings
Doesn't look like it likes trailing underscores.
All characters are stripped except for alphanumeric characters (a-z,0-9) and dashes (-). If a name already exists a number will be appended to the end to ensure it is unique.
So no more support for [mod####] tag functionality then? Pity, that was quite useful for newsposts and showing which game the mod was for all in a nice condensed link.
no smartlink support now - the new editor is WYSIWYG so it should be easy to link stuff anyhow.
yeah but linking to mod gallery images is a p in the a :(
Good job, its the small details that make something truly good :)
Thanks, I love short urls. So much so, that I drop the s on plurals in urls, which I find more friendly to the user as well as shorter.
