We're not professionals. We never claimed to be. We're amateurs and hopefuls reaching for the skies. Much like many of you that come to this site. So it should not be a surprise to hear that we are moving the Modcast to a different service. Yes, the Modcast will now be hosted on Justin.tv in hopes of achieving a better quality stream. All our adoring fans should be able to hear our voices without having to endure the pitch modulation that makes us and our guests sound like we've all been through sex change operations gone horribly wrong.

So, yes, you will have to sign up for yet another account on another site to participate in the discussion. It's worth it though, we promise. For those who have followed us around through this trying time of wading through audio and video codecs, the jumbles of wires and dropped Skype calls, we thank you. We can only hope to improve —and we are— with every show; all the while having fun along the way. With that out of the way, here's the details for the upcoming show this Sunday, August 10th at 1200 GMT -7. For those of you that can't wrap your head around confusing timezones, here's a countdown clock:

This show has been recorded. Thanks for watching!

Great countdown. After all the requests for a countdown, I'm surprised no one else has commented on it yet. Maybe have it someplace on the front page?

For some reason, I'm getting ubearable lag and buffering when watching the video. I usually get flawless streams, so I'm not sure what's going on.

I had the same experience, and because of it, I couldn't record the show: it was like 20 seconds of buffering for 2-3 seconds of actual show. And even then, it seems I got the quiet moments :)

Seriously though, I think this can be improved: use two channels for data transmisions. One would be regular audio streaming, and it will provide the already familiar modcast experience, provided that the person listening has the bandwith for this kind of streams. The main channel however would be your new video broadcast, which would require higher bandwidths.
The main idea is to let the people choose wether they want to use the video channel or the audio one. Having this choice would make a great difference.

yes but there are limitation for the service we choose to provide. After the show its no problem to allow either the video to be downloaded or the audio as well (in fact right now on my second screen the mod cast is rendering out in HD glory, plus a pure audio file with all the non-speaking bits removed as well). Measures are being taken atm to provide a more stable service, now that we know we have access to the quality stream we were after we can work on bettering the entire show so its more accessible, these include cooperating with the staff of justin.tv to bring the best possible solution for the next show.

I agree some cool stuff can, and a bit of it did happen when the chat's are on topic and meaningful in a way which can contribute to the conversation.

X-play beware! Great interviews, not much stepping on each other, not to many people talking at once. I really enjoyed it and the interactive parts that can happen when interviewers can see meaningful things in the chat is very cool. I didn't have too many technical difficulties at times other than when everyone was. Just had to reload the page once. I didn't stay all the way through though so I can't speak to any of the ZPS cast. The slow-mod feature and timeouts are a great feature to have. Business software that does casting like this has additional buttons on the chats to indicate things like applause or technical problems, and displays the totals, which makes the chat a bit more useful when you're backgrounding it. I was disappointed in some of the fan boy behavior. From others' chats it is obvious that some portion of the mod playing community wants the chat's to be on topic so more interaction can happen. Stricter moderation is my suggestion.

OkeiDo Aug 11 2008, 6:11am replied:

Seriously though, most people were just excited and were messing around. That is what happens when you get a bunch of ACTIVE chatters in the chatroom. And no, the timeouts weren't good since the admin randomly handed them out. Two people could have the same behaviour and only one person got the timeout. I got a timeout for asking an unserious question, along with a bunch of other unserious ones from other people and I was the one that got muted for 10 minutes. Didn't feel fair, especially when I'm a part of the ZPS team and I was initially there to answer any questions that people may have about the mod, just enjoy the interview like everyone else and of course to listen to the Level design contest results, a contest that we have put a lot of time into to.

The whole interview had a laidback relaxed feeling, which was really good and enjoyable. Same with the chat, it wasn't dead serious and when they wanted us to answer questions we did. Noone of these "fan boys" bashed any other mods, they were just excited for ZPS and there were no rules saying "No ZPS talk".

Again, great modcast guys!

Sorry you got a timeout you feel wasn't fair. It's also not fair to the modders being interviewed and the people interested in their interview for fan boys spoilish behavior.

Having to comprehensively define spoiler behavior isn't needed. No ZPS talk would have to be, No ZPS talk, and no zps talk, and no z p s talk, etc., etc. spoilers aren't going to read the rules with the desire to make the experience better for everyone, but with the desire on how to spoil the experience.

Well fortunately, the chat doesn't get recorded along with the shows, so you don't have to re-live that part of the experience. In the future, we will implement mods to moderate the chat. While I'd like to have a more developer focused chat, half of ModDB's audience are pure gamers and that ratio will likely carry over to the show.

GSC is the best voice client at the moment. And it supports recording the server directly to uncompressed wav. Simply convert it then host the modcast on youtube. Too easy. You guys make things so hard nowadays....;)
