Report article EU Download Server Activated

For the first time ever, ModDB has a dedicated download mirror for members and guests.

Posted by INtense! on Apr 17th, 2009 digg this super bookmark

Our primary aim at Mod DB is to make it as easy as possible to find great mods and indie games, without having to scour the net and jump through hoops to get them. We absolutely hate it when we see great game content hosted by sites like Rapidshare. Sites which make you wait and push ads which tarnish the hard work you put into presenting your mod (or game) as professionally as possible.

Following Filefronts shock announcement 3 weeks ago (yes yes we know they are back), we decided to take immediate steps to make sharing and getting great content from Mod DB as easily as possible. We have taken the first step toward achieving that aim today by providing a dedicated download mirror to all guests and visitors, by serving your file straight away and doesn't ask you to sacrifice a kitten in the process. So to all our members and anonymous guests enjoy, we hope we have made your day and have enabled you to play and share even more great game content that we have come to expect from all the developers on ModDB.

that's good to hear, really. I absolutely hate the houston one, and withouth filefront the future was looking rather grim... nice to know that we have more options

filefront is okay.

and I'm pretty sure that downloads travel at the speed of light so....

(please note: I am not sure of this, its just a guess)

They dont, the world is not connected by fiber optic. But this does mean great things for ModDB. It means your files will always be safe now.

Actually, deathbal101 is fairly close on this one: even in copper wiring, the electric signal propagates at about 60% - 70% of the speed of light in that medium. :)

I wish I had fiber optic :(

Anyways, it will be great to have a new mirror to choose from. That was the main reason I liked Sourceforge-- they have a billion mirrors all over the world. Now ModDB is one mirror closer :D

What on earth will I do with all these kittens now then? Can I get compensation? Well, Henley, well?!

Great stuff though guys, good job!

we did, but they were always capped and monitored as bandwidth isn't cheap. our new EU server is uncapped and available for use. We are still looking for US partners and may have a US option soon, thou this should be fast for anyone, worldwide.

Dwonloading Zombie Master now, only 69mb. Using the EU server, and for some reason, it barely breaks 100kbs. I am closer to the EU server than the Heuston one, so I am confuzzled.

I think it's faster to hop over to the server and use an USB-stick than to download it directly, but I'm very happy with this new server ^^
