For those interested, my 4 week modeling self-challenge will be kicking off again tomorrow. I am desperately looking for people to throw up ideas on what I should model for the next 4 week's. So, if you have an idea feel free to hop on over to my Call for Content thread here: Moddb.com and leave a comment of your idea.
I have a question for you guys, the community, that I need some input on. As some of you may know I am plannnig to do video tutorials in Blender on modeling and various other subjects. This does however cut into my time daily to prepare and publish. So I was considering a pricing structure for these materials. I don't want to overcharge people like most paid tutorials do, though in compensation for their expertise and time I suppose they're not really over charged, but keep it cost effective while still allowing me to make a little extra income. I was considering pricing each tutorial at 99 cents, that 99 cents would get you the video download and accompanying PDF version of the tutorial. Let me know in your responses in regards to this and provide me some suggestions if you have any. After all, I am doing this for you guys, the community, and your input is highly valued and deeply considered in these decisions.
If you really want to do paid tutorials then they have to be really good, because there already are lots of tutorials about blender, something like on Blenderguru.com which tutorials are just superb quality (and they are free, that guy has released a book and a paid training course "Nature academy") or do tutorials on a feature that clearly lacks in documentation and tutorials, Blender game engine is a perfect example, as it has very little good tutorials.. Also a suggestion, when making the tutorials do a complete scene from scratch to something finished (Blenderguru.com is a great example) If you would be making tutorials for BGE id definetly check them out! Good luck!
Yeah, I'm definitely going to be doing some BGE stuff, especially on the things that I couldn't find support for that I had to figure out. One of the most commonly asked BGE questions is how to handle moving platforms easily, and I have that answer. The paid tutorials thing isn't happening, they will be free tutorials with option for donations if people want. I will be providing game assets however and those will be paid for, essentially, the rights to use the assets. And yes, I've structured my introduction tutorials thus far with singular scenes moving from one area to the next. My character modeling series will be another display of this also.
Where can I learn 3D modeling?
if youre into blender then i suggest you Blendercookie.com
As well as Blendtuts.com
There are a number of resources out there to begin to learn modeling. Consider what it is you have the greatest desire to learn how to model first and start there. If you desire asset modeling find some tutorials on modeling various props, character's then start with character tutorials, maps and such etc. Youtube is a good place to look for tutorials, or the news archive at Blendernation.com. Or if you wait around long enough I will be presented a series of tutorials focused on helping the beginning modeler learn how to create, model, and animate a low poly character model for use in a game.
Blendercookie.com is a good place where to learn Blender :).
I'm going to start doing tutorials for Blender and other software. If you have any requests on tutorials you'd like to see regarding character modeling, character concepting, general 3d modeling, lighting, rendering or anything else you can think of check out my profile page and comment on my recent blog post. I'll do my best to get to requests as quickly as possible.
