id recommend gimp since its free and it's almost as good as photoshop
although photoshop does cost some money

Yeah, but AFAIK, IndieDB trims it badly in case of groups anyway (whether it's 950x150 or not), you can compare:
<- compare the lettering "open source".

These were exactly identical pictures, but IndieDB's page edit script trimmed the picture so the lettering was in part outside the banner (which was corrected later).
