This is a group for those who have broken their mental chains of religion, as well as those who have never been bound by them in the first place. As there being no way to prove the existence of deities, nor anything of superstition. Anything anyone says about any such superstitious notion is a guess and your guess is as good as mine.

I can't help asking.
Why so many people hate Richard Dawkins?

Even many atheists call him "an arrogant prick".
Disrespectful, angry, egoistic and even stupid example we should not follow.

I was very surprised about that as I have seen many of his debates and I can hardly imagine more calm, respecting, polite and understanding gentleman.

I mean who could do this for an hour:
Youtube.com

He never rises his voice and he is debating people like this, like they were completely normal (seriously, that woman is crazy) or even intellectually equal to him.

Dawkins has said a lot of ignorant **** about things like rape.

Though, everything he says on religion is pretty sound.

Personally, I truly respect Richard Dawkins and I also agree with what you said about his personality. I love how he can remain so calm. He is so knowledgeable. He doesn't bash people; he is very polite. However, he is also serious and goes directly to the point without bending backwards. I didn't know that there were many atheists that don't respect him, because I don't see why they wouldn't respect him.
I enjoy watching him debate people.
I believe that he's doing a lot for humanity.

As a Christian, I can't say much for the way he dismisses religious and spiritual beliefs as 'mere superstition'. However, if I had to choose between him and Christopher Hitchens, I would pick Dawkins any day.

Bill Nye though...that's a man I can respect, regardless of disagreements.

I have never read anything by Christopher Hitchens, so I can't really say whether I like him or not. I should check out his work, soon. I heard that he passed away. :(
The only video I have watched with Christopher Hitchens in it is the one available on top of this group's page.

Since there is some kind of random disliker, I gave you both thumps up :).

By the way I didn't know about Christopher Hitchens for long time. I discovered him quite recently... after he died :(.

Since I have only recently broken away from religion, I am still discovering more and more of these amazing atheists.
I have decided to read God Is Not Great after I finish reading The God Delusion.

I have a question.
If there is no god, and all religions are just superstition, then why are do many people here seem to feel the need to bash and disprove every religion they find?

Because, for our surprise, there are still people believing it.

But why is it a problem? If in the end, they're just going to pass away and that's it, why do you need to try and convince them wrong?

The fact that religion tries to control our society and enforce laws based on their story book of desert scribbling, I do have a big problem with religion.

If every religious person just kept to themselves, and it was purely a private matter, then no atheist would give a **** in the first place.

We don't *convince* people around here.
Atheism is a choice, not some sort of belief that you try to force others into adhering.

Exactly; no one is forcing anyone.
Seriously now, have you ever, in your entire life, seen an atheist trying to force his/her lack of beliefs on other people? We do spread our thoughts about religion, yes, but it's your choice whether you want to listen to us or not. If you don't want to listen to us, all you have to do is walk away, or in this case, navigate to a different page. It's quite simple, really.

I just meant that is seems like there's a lot of bashing Christianity, Islam, etc, going on with several of the images.

But I am glad that not all atheists are like that.

Mostly I was just curious. Thank you guys for your replies. :)

My view on it is "say why you disagree with the other person, back it with what you believe to be evidence for your side, and leave it at that"

I totally agree there; I also prefer backing up my arguments with evidence.
I prefer having a calm discussion where both sides respect each other's opinions and beliefs, even when they disagree.

Because religion is a great tool of propaganda. A good talker can twist a meaning of ancient story to move masses for his goal. Nothing moves people as much as others touching their holy belief, right?

There is somewhere in the Quran that muslim mustn't kill a brother (another muslim)...

This is one of the reasons why I can't just ignore religion completely, but try to mock it from time to time.
