I don´t think that they are the first people to fly. And their plane is a trash! It´s just a catapulted hang-glider! They said that they flew in 1903, but there was any real evidence of it.
Santos Dumont´s 14-bis is the real first plane to fly! It had it´s won propulsion (no catapults) and all Paris saw Santos Dumont flying!
Its still an aircraft, and this is when planes were still in its infancy
as with everything it has to start somewhere even if it's in its primitive forms
There are several planes that are launched from aircraft carriers using catapults so would they be considered planes or "catapulted hang-glider" by YOUR words.
They would still be planes.
They were the first powerd/controlled flight that the craft could move in 3 dimensions, utilizing Alerons, pitch and yaw. Others may have used engines on static gliders, but none were controllable.
Behold, aircraft lovers, the genesis of the flying machine... (uhm... just wanted to get out of this PAK FA spamage thingy). Now go ahead and post a new bounch of PAK FA images

You know, Even Mr. Archdeacon of the Aéro-Club de France Stated that the Wrights were first, even after saying it was lies.
