Viggen means "Tufted Duck" and is a pun to the canard wings, "canard" meaning Duck in french. Archaically Viggen means "the wedge" which is a pun to the wedge shape.
If you go to wikipedia one gets the translation "thunderbolt" which is wrong, "åskvigg" means thunderwedge, "vigg" just means wedge.
And you wouldn't translate wedge into thunderbolt would you?
As I quote

But personally I think this image seems to have much better quality than the one in the link.
a bit awkward D:
though while not meaning it, Viggen is a bit of a pun towards Thunderbolt :p
one of my favourits
it's fast, it's fat, and doesn't really look nimble. But it certainly is, alot more then say F-15 thanks to the canards.
Though it really is nothing compared to Gripen!
sweedish designers love canards, eh?
this strange thing on tail is thrust invertor, isn't it?
Yup, that's correct, to lowering the landing run.
And it's the same reason we use Canards, they are helpful for STOL. -here's a vid showing the STOL capabilities of Viggen thanks to canards and the trust inverter: Youtube.com
of course... scared of soviet invasion - only 800 metres runways
Now you can think about your nuke... it really could be pretext to them
I noticed something in the background "The Flying Dutchman"
Lol
