Welcome to the 8th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the premiere event that celebrates the best creations within the modding and indie gaming scene. Developers have delivered plenty of great gameplay experiences this year, and now it is our turn as gamers to nominate and recognize the best of 2009.

From now until Feb 20th, we shall be sharing a year in review and showcasing the editors' picks of 2009, culminating in the announcement of this year's best mod and game as voted by you. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to beanbags. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.

View 2009's most anticipated mods, as picked by you the players.

Posted by Henley on Feb 4th, 2010

Last year there was uproar when a L4D mappack won the best upcoming mod. This year we expect more controversy because excluding the exceptional CoH: Eastern Front, Half-Life based mods cleaned up this category. Considering the number of Half-Life fans and developers, this may come as no surprise to many, but if you aren't one of the millions, push harder to help the mods you love get recognition in 2010. For now, lets acknowledge 2009's most anticipated, because love it or hate it every mod listed here deserves their place, and all promise to provide gamers with something memorable.

To qualify for the top 5, the mod must place higher than it has in previous years and must have had a significant update in 2009. Otherwise an honorable mention is given, which these teams have received:

10 years of Opposing Force To demonstrate just how diehard (possibly crazy?) Half-Life fans are, playing the original Half-Life: Opposing Force game isn't good enough for them. Operation Black Mesa promises to remake it and has had fans drooling over the prospect of playing Corporal Adrian Shephard once more, ever since.

Surface Tension Promo Is any explanation required? Without a SHADOW of a doubt, Black Mesa is the most hotly anticipated mod we have ever seen. The team may not update often, but when they do they stir up a frenzy and there is little doubt why. Will 2010 be their year? Sure looks that way.

8. September 1997, somewhere in Russia. 58 years have passed since the complex has been cut off from the outside world. You wake up in an abandoned tunnel, without even a name.

4Opposing Force 2
is an ambitious Half-Life 2 modification that focuses on making an unnofficial sequel to Gearbox Software's award winning game: Opposing Force. As many gamers think of Opposing Force as one of the greatest FPS games ever, modders making a sequel is an obvious possibility.

3CoH: Eastern Front
is a free mod for Company of Heroes. Following the ethos of mimicking a Relic Entertainment expansion pack, Eastern Front has succeeded in adding a full Soviet faction packed with unique and exciting units to the existing armies - a feat never before achieved in the Company of Heroes world.

2Naruto: Naiteki Kensei
offers a unique fast-paced gaming experience based on the hit Japanese anime Naruto. Combining a third-person shooter with an action-based fighter, players go head-to-head against others online casting powerful jutsus, performing evasive, acrobatic, and free-form moves, while utilizing an array of weapons with multiple functions.

1The Mortewood Plaza
When Mortewood was chosen by the U.S. Government as the first town in America to receive a test for a cure for Cancer, named Project H.O.P.E, naturally the citizens were overjoyed. They thought of it as a blessing from God. But what happens if this so called 'blessing' becomes a curse? What happens if the cure evolves into a much more terrifying disease?

Congrats DEC, Having been quite involved behind the scenes I can only say it's well deserved. Don't worry about them maps folks. Everything is taken care of by this very promising and upcoming developer. I'm sure we'll hear more of dec in the future no doubt. WooT

Aww man, no CoF? I am disappoint. Though Mortewood is excellent also.

Awesome to see the support for CoF from some people here, even though it wasn't nominated, but congrats to Dec! Keep on modding mate.

MrTambourineMan Feb 4 2010 replied:

It wasn't nominated O.o ?! I'll be damned, I was so sure it was gonna win (being my favorite) that I obviously didn't pay attention to the fact that it wasn't in the finals.

m82sniper Feb 4 2010 replied:

Heh, I did pretty much the exact same thing. But Mortewood Plaza is more than deserving of the being picked, so I am still satisfied.

Wasn't nominated in the top 5 I mean. It made it to the top 100, which was cool.

great job everyone!

btw, for those of you who wanted Raindrop to win big this year, keep in mind that we have shown you /very/ little gameplay as of yet, and have big updates in store for you still. We'll win something at some point, but right now let's give it up for the more visibly fleshed-out mods that aren't shrouded in any kind of developer's secrecy.

Sad to say I won't be able to play a lot of these for a little while, because I'm still very busy. But maybe things will settle down once I finish our current to-do list.

Another Zombie mod? I mean sure, a mod with a wide variety of Zombie death in it is going to be popular but aren't there already a load of zombie mods?

Congratulations to everybody who made the list though, everyone on there has done alot of work.

I'm always shocked by those who find the winners a surprise during "Players Choice"

You're more likely to win if:

1. You post quality/decent/presentable news posts regularly.
2. Your mod borrows it's name from a popular Commercial Game/Anime.
3. You can afford to buy enough votes.

It shouldn't be a surprise anymore why Players Choice ends up the way it does. Oh right and

4. Has Zombies.

The monotone voice bores me, it looks like gamespot's GOTY. 2009's MOTY presentation isn't nearly as exciting as the past ones.

Aro Feb 5 2010 says:

I don't disagree with those that are saying the results are a joke, I'm sorry but honestly, it is ridiculous. Opposing Force 2 and Raindrop should of been First and Second. I will never understand some peoples taste in things, I'm still in shock about how successful Gary's mod is regarding what the mod actually is... Then again, everyone has different opinions at the end of the day. I respect Dec's abilities to produce such a fan favorite all by himself, but everything about the mod in comparative just doesn't match the quality of either Raindrop and or Opposing Force 2. But congratulations to him non-the-less. I am not just being bitter because I didn't get a mention, I'm speaking on behalf of my player side and not my editor side so don't take what I'm saying that way. On that note, It's a shame that Twisted Insurrection never got a mention anywhere, but I wasn't really expecting it to be honest cause I know it's almost impossible to compete with Half-Life/Unreal/Crysis mods. Is there any way I could check where I came in the rankings anyway?

MerlinGalgotta Feb 5 2010 says:

Honestly, I didn't even know Mortewood before this result, although I think that I know at least the "most promising" mods, but I really can't understand why people are complaining about the results.

Should be absolutely clear, that this voting is not about quality or quantity but only about popularity.
It is incontestable that Eastern Front for example is absolutely amazing, but in the end, a "company of heroes" mod has simply not that many fans than a Half-Life 2 mod. It is just not popular enough. (I mean CoH itself).

Same with my mod, since months a constant rank in the top 10 of the most popular mods and we have released some quite amazing updates during the last weeks, but with a mod for Empire at War we will never have a chance to win anything here.

But that's absolutely ok, as I don't expect anything else!

So, congratulations to all the winners! :)

Mularac Feb 5 2010 replied:

ha... you're complaining about your game base... try stepping into our shoes :P, modding an almost extint game basically no one knows about XD

Congrats Dec on winning this award, doing a mod by yourself... I can only think how tough that can be... and even so he won! I mean, c'mon, who doesn't deserve this any more than him??

+3 votes     reply to comment
MerlinGalgotta Feb 5 2010 replied:

I think you misunderstood me, I am not complaining about my game, I just wanted to point out, that modding a more or less unknown game does logically lead to nothing else than "no chance to win such an award".:)

But as I said, for me that's totally ok! ;)
