Ever wanted to travel through time, become a master at martial arts, eat soup and own a primate, a castle and a starship? Then this is your game! Wiki-Based-RPG is an open source, text based game, with somewhat experimental gameplay. The server writes a story - based on key words which the game gets from Wikipedia (or any other wiki, if you modify the code a little). Between every two story sections, the heroes (the players) are allowed to reply by saying something, doing something or using something from their inventory. No two stories are alike, but all stories are guaranteed to be crazy! At the end, you can export the story directly to .html and show your friends, post it, or send them to me so I can post them here!

Wiki-Based-RPG 0.6 released!

I'm proud to release the next version of the Wiki-Based-RPG, which has been uploaded and should be authorized soon.
As always, you can also get it right from gitHub.

Custom themes in Wiki-Based-RPG

What's new:

  • Clients can now randomly get the chance to choose the word for the storyteller to continue the story with. Give him the word "Orange-Juice", and he'll have to deal with it!
  • Themes: There's now a support for (custom) themes added. The game comes with 3 standard ones, but you can change them all or add your own. Themes include images that are placed into the game as well as being able to change all of the game's colours. From now on, you can play with a theme suiting your story! (Check Readme on how to make your own theme.)
  • Languages: The game can now be translated more easily. Simply make a new language file and the game automatically finds it and gives the players the language as an option.
  • I Enhanced the text input a little. Not only are unicode characters now supported (see Readme for details) but you can finally click-to-edit the text and use the cursor up/down keys.
  • Bug fixes, bug fixes, bug fixes.

Translating should take less than 30 minutes.
This game is best played in your own, native language, but I only speak so many.

I'd greatly appreciate it if you could translate the game into your own language. I tried to make it as easy as possible by putting all the language strings into a simple file.

There's also example files in German and English.
Instructions on translating are in the Readme in the .zip file.
So send me your translations!

This is version 0.5. To run the game, change the extension of the file from .zip to .love, then launch using the Löve2D Engine.

When anyone enters punctuation, we are told that the entry cannot contain punctuation. And, neither backspace nor delete allow us to delete anything. So, we have to restart the client or server whenever someone accidentally types punctuation.

Why doesn't delete work?

Can you tell me what PC you're running this on? I have never had this Problem... how are you starting the game? 32bit or 64bit executable? Or are you running the source?
Windows? Mac? Linux? And does it happen whenever you enter something, no matter what input field? (Playername, Ip etc)
And, last question, are the keys which are not working (delete) on the numpad? I have a delete key on my numpad which does not work in the game...

How/Where I can change for the game to accept strings or words with accents ? Fixing this I will translate the game for Português (Brazil). And I'll send the files translated. =)

I loved the idea of the game.

I'm working on making this game translatable without having to get too deep into the source code.
I've made it work with language files... The code is done, but I still have issues with non-standard-english characters (for example, German Umlauts). As soon as that's fixed, I'd be very happy if you could translate the game into Português!

I don't know heaps about multiplayer gaming, but how do I get people to join my server?
Do they just type in my IP adress when they're searching? If so, how do I find that out?
By the way, I love the idea of this and can't wait to star playing with my friends! :D

To get you started, check out the Readme file (https://github.com/Germanunkol/Wiki-Based-RPG - just scroll down and there it is). To help you more, I need to know your computer's operating system (probably windows?)
Yes, clients need to know and input your IP. The easiest and most straight forward way is to get hamachi on all computers, have all players join the same network, then start a server and let the others get your hamachi IP (usually starts with 5. ... )

Ah yes, thank you very much.
I'm actually using Mac OSX. I didn't even think to use Hamachi.
Will this work cross-platform?
Thanks again

Yes. The game won't care what System you run it on and a client on linux can connect to a server on windows etc. If it doesn't work for some reason, just let me know!

Hi there,

Great concept, though with my win32bit version, I can't see the "ready" button, which leaves me stuck even before I have tried the game:(

This is what happened: I set up a server and opened a client. I connected and changed my avatar and then I changed my description. Now I'm still at the description, but I can't get out of it or click a ready button. I guess it's a bug?

Nevermind, I figured out the hint on the bottom about normal characters:> I had a "I'm" in my description and didn't see it at first. I think I should be able to use ' in my description though..
