WazHack is a procedurally-generated dungeon game. This is not a button mashfest - you can spend all the time you need contemplating your actions. With over 300 different types of items to be found, there are many different ways to deal with the more than 130 different types of monsters. You will have to use your sword or staff as much as your inventory. It's not a game of plodding to the end and winning (though it is winnable), it's about experiencing the attempt... and learning lessons that will help your next valiant attempt!

Blog RSS Feed Report abuse Latest News: WazHack 1.1 - a feast of dungeon goodness in a free update

0 comments by WazWaz on Mar 25th, 2013

After 6 months of development and an intense beta, WazHack 1.1 is now available. The new content is a free update to the 1.0 version.

Time freezes while you don't move - enemies move when you move... or perhaps you will use time to quaff a potion, zap a wand, or cast a spell. This time freezing mechanics is reminiscent of Dragon Age or even Braid, but in fact it derives from the original Rogue turn based mechanic. WazHack is a roguelike in the same tradition as NetHack or DCSS, but with a whole new 3D visual presentation like none other. You still get "turn based" action, but now a "turn" is a fraction of a second. By removing player reaction time as a concern, you're free to contemplate the vast array of possible items you have in your inventory when faced with a difficult situation, while still being free to hack and slash through a band of weakling kobolds and watch their ragdoll-physics reptilian corpses crumple to the ground.

Desura Digital Distribution

There are now over 300 different items in the game, and the new items go quite well with some of the new dungeon features. For example, you may find a small room with a closed door... before you knock on the door it might be a good idea to drop some of your gems and see if they are actually gas bombs, so you can weaken the horde of monsters as they come out of the room.

The new dungeon branch plays homage to NetHack's "Gnomish Mines". In WazHack, the mine has gnomes, but it also has a mine shaft with an elevator, and some other more deadly industrial advances await you. A pick-axe may come in handy too.

That's enough spoilers! Get playing and discover it for yourself!

Ok, Thanks. It sucks that I have to install this Desura thing though... I was hoping I could download the game onto a flash drive and play it at work...

You don't have to download Desura. You can download the straight file to wherever you want to download it. I just downloaded it today straight to my laptop and have been playing it ever since. No Desura client required :)

I am trying to run the Windows Version of WazHack on Linux using wine. It starts up fine, but I can't enter the game key - it won't accept any input. Am I stuck playing the demo or is there a sneaky way to enter the game key in some config files to get past the input field on startup?

Shouldn't be anything special - if keys don't work there, they shouldn't work in-game either - the input routines are the same - do they work in-game? Best to check on a WINE forum or maybe ask on the Reddit /r/WazHack forum. It should just be click and then type.

I can't really support a version under WINE, but I do promise to make a Linux version if it gets onto Steam through Greenlight - mostly of course because it's a huge distribution, but also because Steam specifies are nice narrow ABI. The engine I use supports Linux and I have done a trial build which sort-of worked with an earlier version of the engine.

Of course, regardless of Steam, I'm very happy keeping WazHack here on Desura. I haven't been following the Desura Linux client progress though.

Hey Waz,

Thanks for your reply!
I think it's boiling down to a font rendering issue. When I played the demo, I noticed that the floating text was missing.
I think I'll be able to solve this in time :)

If not, I'll have to wait for a native Linux client. Something non-Steam and non-Desura and non-"3rd-party register-here-and-install-our-holy-client" version would be nice as well.

I'd even throw in a couple of bucks!

cheers <3

Hmm... it *does* use a unique font size (nice big easy-to-read letters - I hate typing stupid CD keys in as much as you do).

You can CTRL-V paste it in though, so even if you can't see it, it should work fine. It may take a few seconds to accept the input though, IIRC.

Hi Waz,

Thanks again, pasting in the CD Key worked like a charm. However, I can't get the message log in the top left, or floating damage numbers to show up.
I made a screenshot of the font options menu, where it shows which fonts are missing.

here's the image: I420.photobucket.com

do you know anything else I could try?

It is expecting at least an 'Arial' or 'Helvetica' system font to be available. The game font is built it (that's the one you see).

Saved my day! Installing a Helvetica font fixed all of my issues :)
Thank you very much, and keep up the good work!

Tell all your Linux friends about it - but also tell them to vote for it on Steam Greenlight so it'll be worth a native Linux version!

THE most awesome game! New life to the 'Rogue' type. Totally replayable again and again.
