Set in a futuristic cartoon-like world where rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks roam the streets, Warsow is a completely free fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Speed and movement, that's what Warsow is all about. Like a true cyberathlete you jump, dash, dodge and walljump your way through the game. Grab those power-ups before your enemy does, plant the bomb before anyone sees you, and steal the enemy's flag before anyone knows what's going on! A handful of popular gametypes come shipped with Warsow, like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Clan Arena, Instagib and Duel. Warsow invites you to add to this list, by creating your own custom gametypes with the brand new gametype scripting system! Please post all support issues in the forums for the game.

Report article RSS Feed Mods of 2006 - Player's Choice

80,000 votes. 4,000 mods. Over the course of 2 months, gamers from across the globe came together to decide which mods rank as the epitome of what our hard working community can do. Now, gallons of blood and sweat later, we tell you what triumphed in 2006

Every time you read one of these "Best of the Year Awards" features, you always hear the same stpry. Oh, yes, see, this year was way more exciting than the last year, because, you know, everything was so different. Yeah freakin' right. There is almost no difference between 2004, 2001, 1998, anything. It's all bloody the same, right?

Well, I'd be lying to you if I said that the Mod of the Year Awards this year wasn't exciting. When the time came for the Top 100 Mods to be announced, we literally had to sit and watch the list eb and flow, backwards and forwards, top mods slipping off the list, only to come back mere minutes later. The list was changing so dramatically that we couldn't even get a jump start on the writing until it came down to the wire!

From there, we've seen the Top 5 mods slowly shift between established classics, new faces in the community and hard-working projects just beginning to pick up steam. We've seen Half-Life, the game engine that saw the modding community explode, finally be dethroned in the listing, no longer dominating all of the categories and finally having to step aside to allow room for others. And, as I've already mentioned, we've registered 80,000 votes in all and seen our site traffic go through the roof as the impact and popularity of mods continues to rocket ever upwards.

I'd be the first person to roll my eyes at phrases like "the best turnout ever," but let's be realistic here. Mod of the Year 2006 has been awesome. And this is coming from the people who worked their butts off on it.

Prepare to play something different.

No idea how Red alert 3 got the strategy award. Probably because it is completed. Cold War Crisis and Tiberian Sun rising will blow it away next year for sure :p

I also agree, there should be a scoreboard!

We're trying to work out the best way to show a scoreboard. Instead of actual vote numbers it's probably going to be a rank (ie Ranked x in MotY 06)

BTW just to reitterate for those that kinda missed the point (maybe I am just misjudging you all ;P) but these results are from the player vote, so the only people to blame are yourselfs (and each other :paranoid:).

BrotherLaz wrote:
So why is it that the top 100 has no D2 mods, but the RPG award winner is a D2 mod?

The simple reason for this maybe that no other mods of that catagory got into the top 100, therefore the vote defaulted to the Phase 1 voting. The MDB voting system is rather complex to prevent haxxoring and rigging of the votes.

Congrats to all that won :D !!

And the voiceover of the year award goes to: Stuffie! Or methulah. Or Intense. There are just too many sexy voices on those videos.

Congratulations to all mods, where would modDB be without you, winners or not? And congrats to ModDB of course, a particularly successful MOTY this year! Awesome work :)

As happy as I am for BF2142 gamers that they'll be getting a star wars experience, I can't help but think that Galactic Conquest, the old Star Wars BF42 mod, will be able to kick First Strike's butt up and down the street. Galactic Conquest was a masterpiece, and I don't think it's going to back down from being the best star wars mod out there right now. Who knows, though, First Strike may just surprise me. Here's to the future gents.

Ok...I could hardly understand the commentary, and thus have a few tips so that you don't sound like a goose when trying to do audio commentary on the mods in the videos.

Firstly, plan what you're going to say, because it sounded like you were making stuff up on the spot, and words were being jumbled around, things didn't make sense.

Talk like you mean it...it sounded so monotonous and boring, I really was pretty much awake before, but after about 2mins into one of the videos, I found myself getting very bored and was yawning very badly. Fix this by emphasising some points, like instead of saying "The great thing about this mod is that it gives players something different to play, and yadayada yada" say "The GREAT thing about this mod...is that it gives players something DIFFERENT to play"...just a simple little bit of emphasis on words can make a huge difference in the outcome of your speech, and it won't be plain, boring, flat, and monotonous. Also...get EXCITED about what you're talking about...even if you arent excited, pretend like what you are talking about is the greatest thing you've ever seen...trust me..it works.

Confidence in your voice ALWAYS helps, right now I hear alot of voice wobbling, which tells me you're in a rush, and that you arent really sure what you're saying or something, I dunno, but it DOES NOT sound like you guys are confident when talking, and this shows, AND it makes the speech sound really ...uninteresting. So this kinda fits into the Talk like you mean it category, you have to talk with a loud and clear voice, you have to talk slower than normal, and you have to have a smoother deeper voice...even if your voice is rough and croaky like mine, it still helps to talk CLEARLY, because in those videos, I couldnt understand half of what was being said.

I guess the last thing to do would be to know what you're talking about, at one stage, it sounded like one of the commentators were simply basing their opinions off what the trailer for the mod showed..and that told me nothing...getting a few basic points down about the story of the mod and the features is about all that is needed for a good quick description of the mod.

I think the black mesa commentator was one of the worst (sorry man :( )...It just DID NOT sound like he knew what he was talking about...heck, it sounded like me in a higher pitched unconfident wobbly voice when i've just been woken at 3am because someone has called me and wants to know about a game I don't really even know anything about. Maybe these points will help whoeever that was.

Oh...there was also profanity in some of the commentary, words like "bitch" and "sh*t", "f*ck", and comments like "totally awesome", "sweet", "cool" just sound so unprofessional and childlike, this is also why I thought the comments were made up on the spot, because it sounded like people were getting a little excited and going off on their own tangent....you can't do that in this sort of thing.

I hope that has helped, and I really am not saying this to be a downput, I'm saying this as constructive criticism for the future ;)
I look forward to seeing an improvement in the video commentary later this year.

I totally agree with you natace25. We are learning and thats the main thing. This was our first attempt at a big video feature, we tried to mix it up with different voices and ended up biting off more than we can chew.

We've learnt a great deal and will take all of that with us when creating our next video feature.
