Warrior Kings: Battles is a real-time strategy computer game developed by Black Cactus and published by Empire Interactive in Europe and co published with Strategy First in North America. It is a sequel to the 2002 game Warrior Kings and was released March 21, 2003 in Europe and September 30, 2003 in North America. The story is set 100 years after the first Warrior Kings where the Empire of Orbis has fragmented into states of feuding warlords. Like its predecessor, gameplay focuses on the RTS elements of resource and base management and unit combat but also the alignment system where all players start in similar positions and develop into their own unique faction of choice, the prime being under the strict religious knighthood of the Imperial, occultism and demon worship of the Pagan or the logic and scientific innovations of the Renaissance, all supporting both historical and fantasy based unit design.

When you open Warrior Kings Battles you get a D3DERR_DRIVERINTERNALERROR error. This is a fix for it and seems to work for most people.

Intermediate Other.

  • Go to start, all programs, accessories then "Run", type "regedit" and hit OK.
  • Note, this step seems to be different for different users. We need to browse to Warrior Kings Battle's keys. The are a few possibilities to where it's located.

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Classes / VirtualStore / MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Wow6432Node / Black Cactus / Warrior Kings Battles / Renderer"
or
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Black Cactus / Warrior Kings Battles / Renderer"

  • Change the "default_screen_height" to 400 (hexadecimal).
  • Change the "default_screen_width" to 300 (hexadecimal).
  • Change "save_enumerations_to_file" to 1.
  • Leave the Registry Editor open and start up the game but then close it after few seconds.
  • Go to your game directory usually located at the following.

"C:\Programs File (x86)\Empire Interactive\Warrior Kings Battles" Go to just Program Files for 32 bit computers.

  • Open the file named "enumerations.txt" in notepad.

My results where:
Device('aticfx32.dll'): 'AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series'
Driver: 'HAL'

  • Go back to regedit and edit the entry named "prefered_device" to the device from enumerations.txt, the file you just opened. In my case I changed it to AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series.
  • Next edit the "prefered_driver" entry and insert your driver from enumerations.txt, in my case this was HAL.
  • Finally, change "save_enumerations_to_file" back to 0.

Your game should now work! Just try not to break it again...
If you have two graphics cards (not crossfire etc) for example integrated then a amd card then this technique might not work as it would give you the device and driver for just one of the cards and you might be using the other.
